    How hard is the EPM to replace on a Disco 4?

    Okay, well it looks like the handbrake screech had developed into a locked handbrake (or epm to be exact). My trusty LR indie wasn't able to cycle it to relatch it after I pulled the emergency release cable and now I'm left with two (or possibly three) options:

    • Buy a new EPM module with cables and get into it (my own labour and $1400 for a genuine one);
    • Remove the existing EPM and replace the plastic gears with replacement ones (again my own labour and $200 for the plastic gears, that according to my LR indie aren't always that great quality);
    • Access the EPM and remove the lid and relatch the emergency release manually and rewind the EPM manually (best kind of cost plus my own labour).


    Ive done a stack load of 'youtubing' and it appears that the last option is still doable and certainly the cheapest but a quick look under the Disco 4 reveals a different view than the 'youtube' Disco 3 versions I have found. Has anyone had a similar conundrum with their Disco 4 with the EPM and what did you do?

    Before someone points it out I had already cleaned the offending handbrake drums and installed new shoes after the EPM locked on. A'las I should have done this work whilst the occasional squeel was happening instead of waiting for the inevitable lockup of the EPM............. The 'I told you so's" will be immediately acknowledged and ignored .

    Not had to do it but drop the spare wheel and remove the heat shield and there it is, doesn't look like the funnest job to do.

    Check the Britpart YouTube video on removing the EPB and replacing plastic gears which they sell. It’s helpful. Then thank your lucky stars you live in Australia and don’t have the rust and decay associated with these jobs they do.

    We Are Big Kids - YouTube has a good one also.

    Top Tip is to pull through strings on removing the brakes and emergency release cables to remember correctly routing for reinstallation.

    This has been posted before but it might be worth a look if you haven't seen it. NB: (1) As the description says- for entertainment not education, though there is some education to be gleamed.     Well, for those that have come across this issue with their EPB module screeching like a banshee then locking up fully can I say that it was fixable (in my case).

    Through lots of grunting and under my breath swearing I was able to remove the backing plate that secures the EPB module in situ and roll it toward the rear of the car where I could remove the cover. Once I removed the cover it revealed that the mechanism was indeed jammed and delatched. With some judicious use of a screwdriver and a mallet I was able to unjam it and rewind it back to relatch the emergency release and the other handbrake cable. New silicone on the cover and reassemble what I had done left me with a nervous wait to see if it still worked or whether I would need to bite the bullet and buy a whole new mechanism.

    Success!! The EPB was working as designed and all of the red triangle and flashing lights went away, woohoo.

    Now if you haven’t, get into the brakes and recalibrate them so it doesn’t do it again.
