Question how to program new key for 2015 Discovery?

    Hi there,

one of my 2015 discovery key is damaged by leaking battery and stopped working. I called dealer, they quote me $1500 for the new key and replace KVM things and labor. So I contacted a local locksmith, he told me he also needs to take out the KVM and immobiliser to read the data and programming the new key. So the cost is still high as $990. he also said he never tried the process on discovery. But he has done similar job on jaguar.

I searched online and found a lot of posts showing how to programm a new key for discovery 4 using an OBD device without opening the vehicle. Is there any major change in 2015 model and make this method no longer working?

I'm now wondering whether I should spend extra $500 to go to dealer or trust the local locksmith to do the job?

I'm in the United States with a 2016 LR4, and using a GAP IID tool and a "genuine OEM Land Rover Key" bought off EBay, I was able to use their rather convoluted process to duplicate the one key that I had. But I had to have a working key to duplicate. The IID tool was about $500, and is worth the price in spite of the bad user experience: you will likely want it to help with service.

Having recently gotten a new key programmed I believe there are two options depending on the vehicle. Older models without the locked down KVM can (I'm lead to believe) be programmed pretty easily with a diagnostic tool, maybe even the IID. later models can still be done but required direct access to the KVM + a lot more skill and time. Mine was unfortunately the later. an auto locksmith here in Melbourne did it for me for $500 including new key. I think he gave me a discount because he was pretty difficult to deal with. The dealership quoted $2800 and at least a six week delay for parts to be shipped from the UK.

FYI if you do go down this path the KVM is located on the right side just behind the second row seats.

Thanks very much for sharing. Do you have any idea how to check whether the car needs accessing to KVM or not? Such as from VIN or manufactory date? $500 is actually a very good price if I can get it done here in Sydney.

Yes, I also found many threads about using GAP IID tool. but I cannot find any info about how to confirm whether a car requires KVM for key replace or not. do you happen to have the ebay link for the tool? I searched and cannot find $500 price for it. thanks

you'll want to find an auto locksmith experienced with programming keys for modern Land Rovers. The guy I used first tried to program a key using his diagnostic software via the ODB2 port but when it failed he had to remove the KVM and work some magic on his bench.

I would assume, based on the quotes and information you've been given thus far from the dealer and a locky, that yours too wont be programmable via the ODB2 port.

update, called another LR dealer, they gave quote for $1000. Also contacted GAP, support said it definitely will work with D4 2015 and agree me to return it if it does not work. Now I'm really on the fence whether to get a GAP tool and an aftermarket key for around $800 or go to dealer. One thing not sure is if GAP tool fails to program the key, will it lock the KVM and cause whole car not working and need to be towed to dealer?

    No it won’t.

further update. Called another locksmith in Eastwood, the guy gave me quote for $350 to replace the key and said no need to access KVM. I decided to give it a try first since it is very close. I will report back whether he can make it.
