I'd call all4x4 in Kotara first. Super nice people and the prices always seem pretty good.

Thanks Josh I'll start ringing around again on Monday. Need to work out whether i stand to lose too much if i just move the thing on as is or after the repower. TBH I've had a gut full. I'm religous with my maintenance and for the thing to fail at 120k, i could never put enough faith in it to do another trip let alone send the wife and kids up the shops in it

At 120k and service history I'd be talking to LRA for some help. Its worth a letter quoting the relevant Service Bulletins if applicable to your failure.
You probably need to confirm the problem first of all.
    Before: Ser 2a LWB, Ser 3 S/W, 1979 RR 2 door, 1981 LR Stage 1 V8 (new), 1985 LR 110 V8 County (new), 2009 RRS TDV8
    Now: MY13 D4 TDV6. "E" rear diff. Cambo's magic Engine & Auto Tune. 1968 Austin 1800 Mk1 auto (my 5th)

Yeah dude, I love my D4 but the whole engine failure thing is a swear word. I'm all over mine like a rash. It's so good. But she's at 270k now and I'm about to buy her some injectors (ouch). The big bang seems to not be an issue anymore for long in the tooth models so I'll keep up the love. I was going to update to a 16.5 when I had money once.. Glad I didn't. I know you said the fly wheel is spinning but rock the Dampner back and forth. Just to be sure. Doesn't explain the miss though. Unless they are not related. I hope it's a broken crank and you can jam it to LR and get them to help out. Anything else and you may be lonely. Let's hope they help your wallet mate.

Some gentle rocking and careful eyeballing has confirmed that I now have a 2 piece crank.
I bought the car at 80k and turn my own spanners so I'm on my own as far as LR are concerned.
I've been on the phone to all the reputable indies and a few wreckers and it looks like theres no getting out of this south of $22k, thats supply and demand for you. A new long motor fitted is in the mid 40's.
Prelim research at pricing the parts and buying a hoist has me back on road for less than 10 so i will run that option to ground. Then I'll seriously look at going back on the tools full time. With what the shops are charging per/hr the boys must be getting paid well these days- rightly so

I'd be keen to see what if any damage has occurred to the block, I've always wondered about Rebuilding one that has gone bang.

I find it so exhilarating to own a 3L. Every time you get behind the wheel, you never know if it’s the last time.
