I've been on the phone to all the reputable indies and a few wreckers and it looks like theres no getting out of this south of $22k, thats supply and demand for you. A new long motor fitted is in the mid 40's.
Prelim research at pricing the parts and buying a hoist has me back on road for less than 10 so i will run that option to ground. Then I'll seriously look at going back on the tools full time. With what the shops are charging per/hr the boys must be getting paid well these days- rightly so
Although you quote, turn your own spanners, unquote, if you have a history of your servicing and can show your have competence I'd still be inclined to send a lawyers letter to LRA showing your service history, their Service Bulletins, Jaguar recalls overseas, your low klms etc etc. as it would still fall into the category of "goods not fit for purpose".

Get the turbos cleaned and checked for damage plus other components, but at 120,000 klms you could get away with a "long motor" from a Reconditioner.

For the cost of such a letter I think its well worth a try. Show some inclination towards accepting some sort of pro rata warranty from them. They supply engine, you cover the rest, for example.

LRA would be hoping/gambling that many people don't put the hard words on them in such instances. Don't make it too easy for them!!

Including D5's with the same engine.

I love this quote, definately don't let it slip. The issue is how long they take to get back to you. You will have it on the road by then
