SubscriberSo .... there's a Burson at the end of our street and I noticed that someone had left half a dozen containers of oil and coolant on the footpath a couple of doors down from us. When I checked them I discovered that, surprisingly, they appear to be mostly unused .... including an unopened 7 litre container of Penrite HPR 5W-40.
Presuming that it's not out of date, would there be any catastrophic issue using the 5W-40 in my D4 (2014) instead of 5W-30?
(And no, I have no idea why they were left there - I doubt it was the guys from the shop getting rid of old stock, they've got proper bins for that.)

Doesn’t meet spec for a D4
I am using HPR 5 full synthetic 5w40 in my 2011 D4 3.0 it is spec WSS-M2C913-CD non DPF.
As vehicle is well out of warranty reckon it is ok for our climate.Buy it in 6 litre container for single oil change.
I have used HPR 5w40 full synthetic in my D3 for years, I opted for the 40w due to it spending most of the time in the tropics.
Not sure I would be keen to use any oil I found regardless of if it seemed unopened or not.

Yes I'd be very wary of that stuff. Slightly off topic but years ago I had a Prado and had a mobile mechanic come around to service it on several occasions until I caught him using oil he'd "found" in my garage! Bloody cheek. He'd arrived at my place without enough of the correct oil and I watched him later on the security camera putting 5 different oils in to full the sump mostly from cans I couldn't identify from the back of his van.
The oil he "found" was old oil from the Cooks Camry which I had left there before getting rid of it. He only put a bit of it in the Prado but I was absolutely seething, rang him immediately, he denied it but when I said about the security camera went very quiet.
I told him to come round with an unopened can of the correct grade (I'd check it was unopened as well) as I might be silly but I ain't stupid, and change it and the filter immediately. And he still blustered but I told him I'd put it on You Tube and he was round quick sharp.
He's now got another permanent site at the local Shell servo and doesn't speak to me when I pop in for the paper.
AlanH.
PS. I've told another bloke near me as he has 2 Discos, D1 and D4, but he insists he's a good bloke......

Super ModeratorI use the Enviro+ 5W40. Only because the D3 had a DPF, but I've kept with it and now use it in the other cars as well. Looking at the HTHS it wasn't far off the Castrol 5W30 at operating temps.
