Mate. It could be a plethora of things.
Has it driven ok since?
When was it last serviced?
Hypochondria, where you believe you're at risk of being ill all the time is a real thing - is there an equivalent for vehicle ownership?
Anyway, the other day whilst driving the schoolbus (2010 D4 3L) i heard a metallic noise coming from the engine bay. It sounded similar to a sick being stuck into a spinning metal fan, and hitting the blades as it spun around. Not hard, just lightly touching, like a purring metallic lion.
The engine wasn't working hard at all - we were coasting down Greenmount hill (for those familiar with WA). If anything, it was in compression, or engine braking. Engine not fully warm.
Immediate worry is of course (one of) the turbo. Is this something that might indicate impending doom? Is there a way of diagnosing a turbo before it explodes?
Or, could it be something completely different?
I haven't heard it often, and with the music on you won't hear it at all. The wife says it happens now and again (I don't drive the car daily like she does)

Drives fine, which is also why i'm not really stressing too much - no lack of power or anything like that. That said, going on a trip up to Cape Range in a few months, which is typically when things go wrong...
I changed the oil about 2,000km ago, going in later this week to diagnose a potentially shagged rear prop shaft, so can ask then for a once-over. The service before this last oil change was around 15,000km ago, so might just book in to get it looked at by the grown ups.

For what it's worth, a few months ago I was looking for a similar very weird noise on a mate's 6 cyl E Type Jaguar.
You'd swear it was coming from the bottom timing chain/tensioner area (it has two chains). Turned out to be a chunk out of the fan belt!
Suggest having a good look around the belt/tensioners/idler brgs etc.
Any telltale sign of metallic dust/rust around that area of the tensioner brgs?
How long ago (klms) were they done?

I can suggest to have a good listen when starting from cold. Timing chains do rattle at start up for 2-3 seconds until oil pressure builds and pushes the tensioners into place. If they rattle for significantly longer, or continuously, then timing chain guides are worn out and need replacement.
The timing belt was done by Land Rover themselves, and the tensioner by a trusted independent, so i'm certainly hoping the parts are all genuine. Have certainly avoided aftermarket where I can... Still, worth checking - thanks![]()
