    Spare wheel winder failed today

    Hey all
My spare wheel winder failed today. Has anyone got a spare or second hand one?
Also, does anyone know why they fail?
Can you fix them or are they unserviceable
    Cheers

Failed in what way ?, usually only fail if they are wound up without a wheel on causing the cable to bind and get stuck in the housing.
They can be opened up and repaired by drilling out the rivets.

There's nothing in this thread other than a useful title - I was getting new tyres yesterday and the tyre shop went to put the spare back, and the winder wouldn't retract with load on it - so the guys got under the car and took the weight while I wound it up. Once up it held the wheel in place.

Is that a thing with these winders and is it fixable?

How hard are the units to get get out and re-instal?

Or should I just get a replacement off the internet for $100, even though they're the later special tool style which is worse than the 22 mm hex head version...

    are they a Ford product?

the winder on my Ranger failed too and I tried to repair it but gave up and fitted a small boat winch with belt not cable. Took a little bit of fiddling to fit up and needed to use a long socket extension to operate , difficult when you are on your arse in the sun on a rocky bush road. I eventually took it out and put spare up in tray up against bulkhead in one of my many incantations I travel in. Much easier to manage for me.

I think Land Rover have no-one but themselves to blame for that choice piece of engineering!

Definitely second spare on roof/trailer/somewhere for expeditions... but I stuck to 265/60/18 specifically to be able to use that space for the spare!

Absolutely nothing wrong with the winch if it's used correctly.

Exactly - if it loads up you back off but most keep on winding jamming it.

    Classic.

Anyway I don't know what the previous owner did with it but there's something wrong with mine that I haven't seen reported before.

If/when my spare wheel winder fails I’ll just get a swing arm RWC and utilise the space for a water tank

Sorry - I don’t buy that it’s OK if you use it properly.

I would have expected a more robust design than this for a 4x4. When you’re on your own try checking the loads sitting correct while your winding it up from inside the cabin. It might work but it’s crappy design all round IMO.

I built my own chain unit for the old D3 and it never failed me - now I have the D4 I might just have to make another. Link to the chain post ..

My D3 has lost its virginity - spare wheel winch
