Engine stopped - won't start - Looking for ideas

I have a friend with a D3 - while driving down a hill today the engine stopped - It threw an error message - He isn't 100% sure of the wording as there was other stuff happening at the time - like pulling over safely - but he thinks it was something along the lines of 'Oxide' something 'System Error' - Vehicle will not start now. It is at a local Mechanic in the Country and they have no ideas about it.

To add to the above, he did hit some roadkill and has hosed the remains off under the guards and was wondering if something important lives in that area that may have got wet, but I'm not at all familiar with these vehicles but any thoughts or insight would as always be greatly appreciated.

If I get any more info I'll update it.

    TIA - Gav.

Most mechanics these days have generic code readers such as the Snapon unit etc, so start with getting the engine codes read. That’s where the diagnosis should begin.

let’s assume they don’t as the feedback was that they didn't know where to start - chances are the vehicle will be towed from where it is, but was hoping the snippet of the fault code may have jogged someone’s memory.

The errors that present on the dash are pretty generic and mostly useless. I'd start with "is it a TDV6 and does it still turn over without sounding like a bucket of bolts?"

Sounds like it's about to become "A Discovery in its natural habitat. A flat bed."

Engine cranks fine but won't start - doesn't sound like it's done something internal and there were no noises when it stopped - he didn't even notice for a start as he was coasting down a hill and it was only at the bottom when he went for the accelerator again he noticed the dash lights etc and no running engine.

Country mechanic did have a fault code reader - the following info is what I've been given - I was sent a pic of the report but it has details on it I don't wish to share so below is the relevant info.

    P0405 Exhaust Gas recirc
    P1355 Refer official manual
    P140A Refer official manual
    P140D Refer official manual
    P140E Refer official manual
    P0494 Refer official manual
    PO342 Refer official manual
    P0046 Refer official manual
    P0341 Camshaft position sensor

Does the cam position sensor fault shut the engine down - that's the one that stood out to me.

    TIA

It certainly would stop the engine.

Thanks - that is what I would have assumed. Is the location awkward or easy to get to on the TDV6?

Does anyone know the part number off the top of their heads? I'll start Googling it.

The camshaft belt and its tensioner need checking but hopefully only a sensor or sensor wiring fault. If the belt has broken or the tensioner attachment point has broken off then expect lots of bent valves.

How many kms since the camshaft belt was replaced?

Thanks - not known re the timing belt or when it was done last - will check. Would have thought the mechanic would have noticed if it was broken or not but I'm also assuming it's behind a cover/s.

Camshaft sensor part number LR019287 - is that correct?

    Cheers.
