    Caravan Breakaway Battery Monitoring

NSW RTA have legislated that there has to be a facility to test and monitor the battery contained within the Breakaway Control Module fitted to caravans within the tow tug .

Is it necessary to install wiring from the trailer plug to where the remote indicator is installed or is there a conductor in the trailer plug that can be used?

    Appreciate any advice.

Hi Gravy, and where did you get that info from?

It has not been necessary to fit a Breakaway Battery Monitor in NSW, for some time, BUT they may have changed the rules again.

If they have, I make a Wireless Breakaway Battery Monitor kit, which is approved in NSW, and is very simple to fit.

Again double check the rules first.

Looks like VIB 6, which outlines/clarifies the inspection requirements, hasn't been rescinded. So it appears the requirement still applies, but so few people actually know about it, it's almost as if it exists just as a freebie for insurance/coppers...

I can't find a reference for the regulation itself, just the inspectors bulletin. That being said, I honestly couldn't be bothered searching through that behemoth of a document on a Monday morning! Haha

For what it's worth Gravy, this ratbag does make some nice products.

    Good luck and enjoy.

    Hi Chris

This sounds like an excellent solution, what is the damage to purchase one of your units and is it compatible with a Breakaway 6000.

    Thx

You can search for the regulation as much as you like, but you won't find one. There never has been any legislation requiring this useless feature. It has only ever been an 'Inspectors Bulletin" which has no legal value in its own right.

Go onto any of the local caravan forums and it has been done to death.

My recommendation for the breakaway battery is to throw it away and connect direct to the house battery installed in almost all caravans these days.

    Regards
    Trev
