    TDV6 alternator replacement

I was in a discussion on reddit about 70 series Landcruisers and a bloke popped up and said that Discos need to have the body lifted off the chassis to change the alternator. I know for a fact it ain't true for a Disco 2 because I certainly didn't when I swapped out my alternator. He came back and told me he "believes it's the TDV6". I had a quick trawl through here and couldn't see any mention of it. TDV6 Alternator Replacement. This thread certainly didn't seem to require such extreme measures. Any further info or was I right to call BS.

Easily?? Feasible, and there are definitely harder jobs to be done. It's no fun if it's not a challenge.

    Ratchet spanner essential!

I did it the other day following these instructions and found it pretty easy. Not as easy as a simpler, older engine perhaps, but I haven't worked on cars in years and I was able to sort it out in a couple of hours. The ratchet spanner certainly made it a much easier job

Not body off,but compared to a 70 series 1-VD,much more difficult to do.

Ha ha, if I, of very little tools, space and experience can change the alternator under my carport it is certainly not a body off job.

Granted, it took me 3 hours as I don't have a tool to remove the fan and (at the time) I had no ratchet 13mm spanner (bought one next pay) it was actually a straight forward swap. I won't say it was easy, but it was done with no special tools.

Not bad going, but the fan doesn't have to come off to get the alternator out. Access from underneath is straightforward once the belly pan and intercooler short hose is removed. Hardest part is getting the cable connector at the rear to go back on.

Oh dear…. It’s a simple job on a TDV6. Just an hour or two.

Go back and ask old mate LC how it goes doing a starter motor on the V8 TDV6 alternator replacement

And #1 Ronny Dahl mod is to swap to a water cooled aftermarket alternator as they fry out in first water crossing on the Toyota.
