No expert, but my understanding is that the phone needs Bluetooth in order to control its functions, not wifi.

Not for CarPlay. It uses a wifi feed.

It uses USB, wifi or Bluetooth. But I thought it needed BT to control the phone functions. Learn sumfin new every day.

I’m a bit confused now. I connected my iPhone via Bluetooth direct to the CarPlay box. I removed my phone from the vehicles core system

This probably won't make it any clearer then :

Carplay requires Bluetooth and WiFi. Your phone will be Bluetooth paired with the Carplay box. When it connects it'll use the Bluetooth connection to exchange credentials then it'll establish a WiFi connection and commence carplay. From that moment you don't need the Bluetooth connection any longer.

Conventional hands-free uses Bluetooth only.

Not that you'll want to, but with Carplay you can actually turn off the Bluetooth on your phone while it's connected and it'll remain connected. If you turn off WiFi however it'll drop out.

There's a serious WiFi interference spot in Perth across the Narrows bridge that causes interference if I'm using wireless carplay. So much so I've gone back to the USB cable because it's just more reliable.

Edit : After re-reading the original message. Is your carplay box after-market? Mine (different box, different car) has a specific "ignition" wire that tells the box I've turned the car off. It then pauses all media and drops the connection. It does have a continuous power feed to manage the settings memory and make for a faster boot.

My CarPlay box is an aftermarket. It’s one of the ones that Cambo sells.

Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that about how it connects to wireless. I’m now wondering if I should try connecting the USB cable and setting if that’s any help. I didn’t install the USB input because it seemed to work fine via wireless.

Back to pulling the dash apart again I think

Was it completely plug and play or did you have to pick up some trigger wires etc? I wonder if so, if you got the wrong wire somewhere?

Also, have you simply asked Cambo??

I have a similar experience - the car switches off, so the head unit and amp stop, however power remains on for the carplay, because i picked up the power feed from the cig plug, which stays on for a short while.
Upside, is because carplay gets power when you unlock, it's booted and ready to play when you start the car.

Downside, is the phone remains connected, with the unit happily playing to an amp thats switched off. Once power to the cig plug/car play is lost (by locking, or time out) the phone loses connection, and pauses.

Doesn't bother me, as i listen to music, and so picking up a new song instead of the second half of the previous one is no issue. Bit different for an audiobook though.

Possible fix is to grab power from the console fridge box? that only has power with 'engine on'?
