Oil in Secondary Turbo Intercooler Hose

Hi

This is my first time posting, but I have gained some great insights using this forum for the last 3 years since I bought my Disco and I am looking for for some inputs re Oil in Secondary Turbo Intercooler Hose.

While doing an oil and basic service on Saturday I checked the bottom intercooler hoses on Saturday and difficult to say how much as some spilled on the ground rather than container, but I would guess about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of oil spilled out of the Secondary Turbo Intercooler Hose.

I cleaned it out and checked again today after 4 days, while there wasn't heaving pooling there was of drible oil come out.

Some additional information
- I checked the primary turbo hose and while it has a very slight film of oil there is no pooling
- The hose from top of intercooler into plenium and throttle body also has a slight film of oil, maybe slightly thicker than the primary turbo hose and inside the plenium and I assume the throttle body and inlet manifolds will be the same
- The turbo drain mod was done before I got the car
- Both Turbos were replaced last year, the primary due to failure (the housing cracked open) and when the body was off they checked and the secondary turbo was full of oil and the Indie recommended to change while the body was off as it was likely to fail soon anyway
- A lot of our driving is city driving and at the minute its not regularly driven to the RPMs where the secondary turbo would kick in
- Car drives and feels ok, no loss of power or anything
- No error codes in GAP IID tool
- A little black smoke if I rev car hard while idling in neutral, but not noticing any smoke while driving

I have done some searching (on this forum and UK ones) but I think I am getting some mixed views, but my take after what I've read is that I should expect to see a film of oil in these hoses, but the amount of oil pooling in the secondary turbo hose is not normal and I need to get to bottom of it, is this the general consensus ?

Any ideas on what I can further check to narrow down the issue, if there is one ?

Are you sure the turbo drain line modification has been done? With EGR and integral catch can in the system, you will inevitably get oil inside the intake tract including intercooler. After the drain line relocation this is very much reduced. If you could blank off and map out the egrs, it should go away altogether.

And yes, you do need to give it an Italian tune up, these 3.0L diesels do not like stop start driving. Take it for a long all day 100kmh run, the car will thank you for it.

Yes, I am 100% sure the drain mod has been done.

We are planning an overnight drive Sat night if we can find any tracks open near Sydney, thats why I was giving it a once over as hasn't done much recently,
With the EGRs I thought that would reduce soot in intake at the throttle body and into manifolds (which could clog up over time, particularly of no Italian tune ups), I didn't think that would cause oil further back in the boost system ?

Yes, I was expecting a film or maybe small drible of oil, it was the volume that concerned me and whether there might be a turbo issue, particularly with it being replaced 21 months ago

I will monitor more closely but I should also have called out that not burning oil, at least in any measurable or meaningful way

I've done a fair bit of reading but still learning

Disabling EGR valves won't affect oil accumulation in the I/C but oil in the bottom of the I/C is normal. Service procedures include draining and flushing the I/C at quite long intervals but is rarely done.

Thanks Graeme, I did expect an oil film, but just for my clarity your saying pooling of maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a cupful is normal ?

If you’ve never drained it, yes, and more so if when the drain mod was done, no one emptied it.

It would have been removed / drained when the Turbos were replaced early last year as the intercooler was taken out and cleaned, so looking at about 18months I guess
