    Timing Belt Replacement

    Hi All,

Is it best practice when replacing the timing belt to replace the 2 idlers and the tensioner?

    Thanks

    Timing Belt Replacement

    Kits come in different varieties but a good kit will have these (tensioner is mandatory) and then there’s;

    Water pump
    Fan support / bearing
    All accessory idler pulleys
    Accessory tensioner
    Accessory belt

For the full monty job every 7 years

    Timing Belt Replacement

Replace the tensioner bolt as well - but only with genuine.

They have also been known to snap when re-used as it is very easy to over torque.

Get the kit from Advanced factors as it has everything you need unless you are replacing the oil pump as well in which case you'll need the crank bolt and oil seal too.

In addition to the two belts (timing and high pressure fuel), I also replaced, whist it was easy to get to:

    Water Pump
    Oil Pump
    Alternator

    Reason

Oil pump was to ensure good oil pressure to minimise risk of the dreaded bearing/ crank issue. Was all done at 162,000. Now at 195,000 and motor purrs like a kitten. No clatter at startup.

Also, alternators seemed to have issues at about to 7 year,180,000 mark with others so I thought I'd just pre-empt any problem.

Not related, but I also do all fluids every 75,000km, both diffs, transfer and gearbox

The latest/upgraded oil pump has a 15mm vs 13 mm impeller according to LR Time.

    Timing Belt Replacement

Having just fitted the latest it certainly goes silent very fast. Has also coincided with 5-40 oil change but starting viscosity shouldn’t change.

I previously updated the pump to the beefed up tensioner version in 2014 so hopefully got the 13mm then and 15mm now.

I always ask “is this a job I want to do twice?”. That usually results in pretty much everything that can be done being done.
