Thread: Sagging headliner

I was wondering when the D4's would start to deteriorate. Past experience with multiple Classic, P38 and D2s suggest you just have to bight the bullet and get it professionally re-lined. I've always removed and refitted the liner myself, leaving the trimmer to do what he's best at.
Mind you, transporting the liner to/from the trimmer can be a bit tricky. Sometimes you can sort of temporarily fit it. Some trimmers will pick up and deliver or perhaps you can borrow a van.

Dunno about D4s, but on most cars the glue thing doesn't work. My D2 and my BA are evidence of that. A short term "fix" is to get some drawing pins to keep it from falling more. You can probably even get 'em in a similar colour. As I say, short term, but it stops it from getting more annoying until you decide to take it out.

DO NOT GLUE IT!!!!! It will make repairing it properly later a pain in the backside and it doesn’t work because the foam has let go and no amount of glue will keep it together. You can buy headliner tacks to pin it up temporarily until you get it relined.

Reclining isn’t super hard, just a lot of disassembly required. Remove out the rear, remove old lining and loose foam, apply glue then new headlining material. Insert.

I think I agree, gluing is not a good idea. I’m going to have to remove the liner and get rid of the bad foam and start from scratch. I was hoping for a quick fix but I don’t think there is a good long term one. next challenge is trying to work out how to pop the liner from its fittings so so can start the repair.

Disappointing that it’s happened in the first place, the outside paint on the roof has clear coat pealing off, looks terrible. I’ve got a 2007 Suzuki Vitara that’s been sitting in the sun all it’s life with the paint is still in great shape.

There’s a lot to remove so you can slide it out. I think it’s in the manual however.

I paid to have it done. Total job $800 drive in / drive out. I could have saved $300 by doing the removal and refit myself. I let them do it.

I think you posted that in January when I said I had mine done in Darwin by an upholsterer/motor trimmer for $660

I probably did. I suppose the point I was making is it's not a small job and paying someone else to do it can be worth it.
