Engine numbers on 3.0 Diesel (And TDV8 and 4.4L/5.0 L petrol)
One of the joys of living in SA is that when you go to register an interstate vehicle, it needs to be checked by Motor Reg (I have no problem with this at all) but it also includes a physical check of the engine number vs the interstate registration paperwork.
Not sure if other states have this, but it is certainly here!
When I bought my Wrangler from Vic, it took 3 visits to motor reg before we eventually discovered the diesel Wranglers do not have an engine number!! The engine number on the dealer paperwork was generated from the chassis number, This was supported by a letter from Jeep. After a hell of a lot of talking, and calls to the dealer in Vic and Jeep, the inspector eventually capitulated and found a casting number on the block, and used that as an engine number.
When my wife brought her Volvo T70 from Victoria, it was rejected as they could not locate an engine number, and it had to go to an indy who photographed it after removing various bits, and sent the photos, with a stat dec, for motor reg to transfer the rego.
Likewise for my late D3 V6 petrol which came from NSW and had to go to an indy to remove bits, and get a photo of the engine number, stat dec, etc etc.
As the market for what I'm looking for is a little limited in SA, I will probably buy interstate, so I'm trying to find out now how easy it is to find the engine number on a 3.0 V6 diesel???
And as I might end up in RRS territory, I'm looking for the TDV8 and 5.0L petrol locations as well.
I don't mind using a bore scope/camera, but it would be helpful to know where to look when the time comes.
Obviously, if I buy local, all this is moot.
