If there's frost or wet snow about, in winter in Japan we used to put sheets of cardboard on the windscreen under the wipers - but in the US and Canada they use the same external windscreen covers that we use for keeping the sun out. It's a lot easier to pull them off and shake them out than try to scrape ice off a windscreen, and the wipers don't stick to it. I've had up to 50cm of snow on my car in the mornings and powder snow is no problem getting off the car, you just need a squeegee.
Don't use things like window cleaner or metho on your windscreen unless you want to destroy your paint and rubbers, and I've never cracked a windscreen from putting hot water on it or ever heard of it happening, even before laminated windscreens.
