Do you have access to a diagnostic tool? A quick look at the gallery pressure while it's running will give you an indicator.
Gallery pressure is measured absolute, so anything around 1 bar is atmospheric. Above that, the gallery is sealed which means the pipework is probably ok.
A roar would indicate something isn't quite right, but you knew that already.
If I was tackling it I'd start the car to get the compressor running and have a poke around underneath to see where the majority of the noise was coming from.
