    New GPS and reversing camera

Well, I've taken the plunge. After having a read over on disco3.co.uk at what people were doing for SatNav and stuff, I liked this solution better than anything else I saw.

I've had a search running on eBay, and this week both the screen and the Nav unit came up in the US for not much money at all.

A quick check with Kenwood support told me that the G510 (G520 in the article is the Euro model) unit is basically a Garmin GVN52 with added touch screen functionality and could be loaded with non-US maps bought from Garmin. eBay seems to have these quite a bit cheaper than Garmin/GME too.

There's even a remote possibility it will run the Garmin compatible offroad maps too on a seperate SD card.

So, all I need now is a reversing camera, and I should be good to go once it all turns up.

I'm either going to have a very nice system, for probably not much more than A$1k + fitting, or I'm going to be very upset and have a pile of stuff I can't use or a very expensive TV and reversing camera! We shall see, I guess.

Oh, and if anyone knows a decent audio installer in the Perth area that can take a D3 to bits and wants some private work, please let me know, as otherwise God only knows when I'll have time to even think about fitting it!

Value GPS with cheap reversing cam option

    Hi Jeff,

Just bought a LogicGear XL488 Auzzie designed 4.3" GPS from OfficeWorks for $359!
Comes with cradle, car & home charger, WhereIS V14 mapping software (red light, speed cameras, school zones 500K+ POI). Voice directions etc.

I also purchased optional colour reversing camera for $54 delivered. I decided on this after a tree ran into back of vehicle

XL488 runs on WinCE operating system, so runs OziExplorer OK on 2GB SD card.
I currently have all Australian offroad maps loaded.

If this is not enough unit plays all audio formats, Video formats, Stills and can display Word docs!!

Check out site at Logic Gear - GPS

Has to be the best value GPS on the market. Being local company and good tech support you can't go wrong. Maps are the cheapest I have seen & cover just about the entire world.

    Cheers..Bruiser

    Hi Paul,

Logicgear reversing camera comes with wiring harness. I mounted camera under bumper bar and connected power to reversing light wiring. Screen comes on automatically when reverse selected.
Then ran cable under carpet edging thru cabin. Cable then plugs into socket on GPS cradle. You can mount camera any way you like as there are orientation settings in XL488 to compensate. Whole job was done in less than an hour.

I forgot to mention that XL488 also has Bluetooth interface for handsfree mobile phone. To get all these features in a Garmin or Tomtom you will be paying close to a grand.

Thanks, but I have a couple of portable GPS's and specifically wanted something fitted in the D3.

My reversing camera was $30 or so on eBay, but that hasn't turned up yet.

Got the screen pretty much fitted yesterday, but won't have time to do anything else for the next month or so!

    Thanks Bruiser

I was thinking of getting a plate made up and mounting it in where the LR GPS unit sits, hence the question on who you were getting to install it (I know a couple of Auto Electrics through our business but all mentioned they have never worked on D3's).

Where about's on the bumper did you mount it? as I just had a look and it all looks quite flimsy

    Thanks again

    Cheers Paul

    Thumbs up

    Hi Paul,

My GPS is just mounted using supplied window cradle mount. This give me the flexibility to use it in the wife's car when reqd. The reversing camera cable plugs into cradle. I always remove GPS from cradle when parked to prevent sun damage & theft.

The camera is mounted under bumper plastic. It is small & light. Just positionb where it wont get knocked too easily. Other option is in middle of bumper with just lens protruding as per reversing sensors.

XL488 has powerful processor & 20 channel receiver so has no problem with OziExplorer. Just be sure to download the CE version. All Australian contour maps are available as free download from Govt mapping site. Let me know if you require the links.

    Hi Chris,
No you haven't blown your bucks.
Oziexplorer CE is available as download from site. You can install and run it , but will get nag screen until you register it. Only $40 and updates free.
Someone told me that there is a new release that has loads of new features. I will download & test it when I get some spare time.
