One of the reasons that I bought my D3 was for the 17" wheels. It gave me a higher profile tyre (ie more configurable off-road) and a greater range of tyres.
While >17" tyres may look great in the street, I have been VERY happy with the 17s.
Tyre wear is more about the make of tyre than the size. The factory Goodyears are pretty poor for wear, I've got 21000 Km on mine now and the tyres are probably 60 - 70% worn. The General Grabbers seem to be going ok though, there are a few threads, have a search.

I want to change from 18" to 17" rims as I then can get a light truck rated tyre which will handle the heat and corrugations while towing a 3 ton van. I had several tyres delaminate on my last trip around Oz as they were not able to handle the heat etc, though without the load and van that same brand of tyre's are great for the car on its own.
