    D3 17" wheels and Tyres

Hi all - my first post.

I have 19" wheels on my D3 and was looking to get some 17" wheels and tyres just for playing off-road and in the sand (Fraser Island).

I've just ordered an external wheel carrier and auxiliary fuel tank from Opposite Lock so I'm not worried about the diameter of the 17". However, I could do with some advice on both the wheels and tyres.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Fris

    Hello Frisbee, welcome aboard!

    Do you have a TDV6, V6 or the V8?

If you have a V8, the smallest you can go is 18".

For the others you can fit 17".

There are some different types available. I have Performance Wheel BB6 8*17 alloys.

Someone else also makes a steel wheel, but I can't remember who.

    Cheers and thanks Jamo.

    It's a TDV6.

Where did you get the BB6's from? I understand that the standard size 17" wheel is 7", are there any issues with having 8"?

    What tyres do you have?

Dynamic do 17 inch steel wheels. But I think you need different wheel nuts?

No problems with an 8" wide wheel. The OE 18" is also 8" wide. I have Cooper STT LT245/70T17s on mine and there's no rubbing at any stage.

Some here have found them to wear a bit too quickly on rocky stuff, but since it's mostly sand around here they haven't been a problem for me.

The sand here can be really soft. I run mine at 16psi and it's like driving on bitumen.

    Thanks Jamo

So the STT go OK on sand (at the right pressure).

Is that sand on the beach?

I must admit I like the STTs. If they work on the beach as well I'm sold.

I've approached my local Goodyear outlet to try to get GY to bring to Aus the MTR and Silent Armour in LT245/70-17 (LI 119), as they're both available in the US.

    Hi All,
Are the Brembco brakes only on the V8, or also on the higher-spec. TDV6? If the latter, 17" wheels won't fit.

    Best Wishes,
    Peter

    Peter,
The Discovery 3 does not get Brembo brakes at all. (Only RRSport & RRVogue get the Brembo's)
Its just that the V8 has larger diameter brake discs & therefore needs a minimum diameter wheel of 18" so the discs fit under the wheel.
    Cheers
