Pete, is the SatNav a true HDD or is it actually solid state (like a memory card). I would have thought a hard drive would not be a good move in a 4WD - unless of course the D4's suspension is incredibly

A mis-fuelling device prevents a petrol nozzle being inserted into a diesel tank, by means of a clever device within the filler neck. And a little hand comes out and slaps you.

Hard disks in 4WDs work fine, used them for many years. HDDs are nowhere near as fragile as assumed. What kills them and other car computers is usually excess heat through insufficient ventilation.

OK, seems a little ridiculous but I can imagine there are a lot of people buying a diesel for the first time now days so kind of makes sense. Does the hand also reach out and smack them on the back of the head?

HDD's have come a long way but believe me you can easily kill them on rough enough terrain. Also the other reason I ask is there is a move towards solid state drives and given the storage required for SatNav etc isn't that large (relative to modern HDD's) a simple 8GB UDMA CF card would suffice.

Solid state would make most sense, as you say capacities are well in excess of what's required.

As for misfueling, as a knowledgeable car enthusiast maybe you wouldn't, but plenty of people do and I've come close myself once or twice. So, it's a great idea. The repair to a modern vehicle can be very expensive.

I also have the added benefit of having to refuel at a service station which has more diesel pumps than ULP or PULP. Not like in cities where it becomes a task to even find the diesel pump sometimes

$20,000 is the typical cost of repairs needed after filling up an RR diesel with unleaded.

You can also get some diesel bowsers that will trip the misfuelling device.

While I agree that solid state will be the way to go and I’m waiting for more solid state video cameras to come on the market, but HDDs have a lot of self protection devices built in these day and this helps them to tolerate some pretty rough handling and still function OK.

yep,, its tru,, last tdv8 we had with 80L pulp ran till it stoped and that was 24.5k, and about 22 of that was just parts,
