    EGT GAUGE TDV6

Hi to all, I have just acquired a D3 TDV6 , have migrated back to Landy , after a spell of 7 yrs with Patrols , a GQ 4.2D and a GU zd30.

Woild like to know if anybody fitted a EGT gauge on their TDV6. If so where is the probe fitted.

    Hope you guys can help.
    Regards

    Hi Koos

I am not sure whether anyone has done this on a D3, and to be honest with it's comprehensive engine management system that will warn you about the most minor of faults I am not sure whether it is neccessary.

That said I am buy no means an expert on the D3 or diesel engines for that matter. I am sure one of the guys or girls here will be able to say for certain. Also if it has been done to a D3, that person will be here somewhere.

Not something I have searched for on this forum, but I don't believe you have the same concerns with 2.7TDV6 as the Nissan 3 litre. I am ex Patrol and I know where you are coming from, but the Disco is a clean sheet of paper after the Patrols. By all means chase down EGT on the threads, but the Patrol 3 litre has ( had ) a particular weakness, not necessarily replicated in any other motor. I have the 2.7 in a D4 . Early days so far, but I am enjoying the ride. Have fun in the D3.

My concern here is , like you guys down under we operate in very high ambient temp. , so its nice to keep an eye on the gauge to prevent overfueling ect.
But I dont seem to find anybody who has done it here in South Africa or abroad.

There may well be an reason, as I mentioned earlier, that no one has. The TDV6 is a vastly different animal to the older turbo diesels used in the patrols and the like. They are extremely complex engines, with some serious engine management systems. I reckon issues like over fuelling etc are just not likely to be issues with a motor like the LR TDV6.

To give a bit of context. The 2.7 TDV6 was at the time (I think) the smallest Turbo diesel available in it’s class, but with class leading power and torque figures (almost twice the 4.2l turbo diesel in the Patrol). In order to do that they require some pretty sophisticated management and as a result the computer has to monitor and control just about every aspect of engine performance, so I suspect (and I am happy to be corrected on any of this by those who know better out there) that things like EGT are monitored as a matter of course, and any issues with this sort of thing are managed by the computer and if they can’t be, rest assured alarm bells will ring………

As I posted previously, the D3 2.7 is a new sheet of paper compared to the Patrol. Believe me, you have a whole new set of challenges and issues to overcome. Whereas the Patrol is very conventional and accessories/enhancements fit much as they have to 4WD's for decades, as you will see, even adding a dual battery has taken a bit of creative thinking. ( not that it is ultimately any more complex ) I think a lot of this is also due to owners not wishing to carve up their sophisticated 4WD, just to fit an accessory. The days or screwing a microphone clip into the metal dashboard are pretty much gone, unless you have a Troopy or a Defender. I would not be too concerned about EGT's. Go exploring and trawl this site for the wealth of data available. If you need an explanation or more assistance, there are plenty of knowledgable people willing to assist. A good start point is to outline what gear you have fitted and what you would like to do with your D3.

    Thx Admiral.
So you say an EGT gauge its not so important on the TDV6.
What I want to do is the following.
    • EGT gauge(ex Trol)
    • Dual Bat system with Deep Cycle in engine bay .(ex Trol)
    • Fit an Engel socket at the back with an Anderson plug at the towhitch (ex Trol)
    • Fit Roofrack(ex Trol)
    • Fit Thomas compressor in engine bay(ex Trol)
    • Snorkel (Land Rover)
    • Bullbar.(AR
    • Drawer System(homemade)
    • VHF Radio(ex Trol)
What I intend to do is tour our Sub Region , SA, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique. Actually the same as what I have done in the Patrols.I also tow an Afrispoor off road camping trailer. As you know nothing but nothing beats an African bush experience , the Fauna and Flora is unbeatable. Here Swags dont work only RT tents.I we camp in Swags youlll never see the next morning , either chowed up or trampled by an Eli

So I need advise on how to install ,mount the accesories in my new baby. So pse help.

I'm no expert but you may have trouble fitting both the battery and thompcompressor in engine bay.
Another option is to use onboard compressor there are plenty of threads on this.

I believe there are better snorkels out there than the one supplied by LR, I don't think this unit is sealed, please correct me if I'm wrong

    Sounds like fun ahead!

    • EGT gauge - NO IDEA
    • Dual Bat system with Deep Cycle in engine bay - EASY - place for 2nd battery is there already; Traxide system (see their website) is custom designed for LR
    • Fit an Engel socket at the back with an Anderson plug at the towhitch - EASY
    • Fit Roofrack - EASY - most racks will take a RT tent
    • Fit Thomas compressor in engine bay - best spot is infront of cranking battery
    • Snorkel (Land Rover) - be aware this is a RAI not a snorkel; Safari make a snorkel (but IMO LR RAI looks better!)
    • Bullbar.(AR - ARB has great winch or non winch bars
    • Drawer System(homemade)
    • VHF Radio(ex Trol)

    Now you are away.
    - As BlackPerth has replied, the Traxide is proven compatible with LR systems, and won't fry anything in your ECU.
    - Check out Frontrunner in S.A. They make a lot of gear suitable for use in homemade drawer setups
    - The Engel socket , is that the same as a Hella plug ? Looks like a shortened audio jack. I am not sure if this applies to the D3s'- others with more knowledge may care to comment. My D4 is a two row seat version. The D4 3 rows, get a rear aux jack in the rh cargo panel. However the wiring for the plug is there behind the rh storage pod door. Worth a look, but note that the front aux plugs go off with the ignition. I suspect this one is the same. You may have to wire direct. Again check out Traxides new battery box as a different option.
    - There is a good thread under the tech section on this forum, detailing how to wire in an Icom UHF. It should give you plenty of pointers for your VHF. No doubt someone on the site has already done it with VHF.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing your D3 develop.
