    RRS Battery Flat

I did a silly thing today

I left the ignition on in my RRS (2.7 TDV6) for about 3 hours. I was doing some work that needed the doors open and switched power on and to get rid of the annoying gong (key in ignition when door open) I switched the ignition on rather than on accessory.

Of course I got distracted by something else and then forgot about it until I came back to the work I was doing a few hours later.

Battery showing 6v and tried jump starting from a few different batteries where it would turn over but not fire up.

I now have the battery on the charger (12 amp) but the battery is 7 1/2 years old so I think in reality it will be going to the big charger in the sky.

    So two questions:
    1. When ignition is left on too long is there anything else like for example fuses or doing a hard reset etc do I need to have a look at.

    2. For Canberra people - where is the best place to chase up a new battery?? And what batteries are available locally. I know LR have changed from the calcium battery I have now and gone to an AGM so what have local people bought and found suitable - cost? A few months back I did enquire at a local battery factory in Fyshwick and they were mainly interested in selling me a 650CCA (75Ah) battery (not a 950CCA (95Ah)) and dismissed my protests saying a larger battery was not needed. I disagreed.

I will leave the battery on charge at the full 12 amps for 3 hours to get some charge into it and then switch back to auto so the smart charger can do its thing.

    Thanks

    Garry

Believe it of not, I got my last battery from Costco. Cheaper than the Battery Factory and larger.

Good run from that battery Gary, my OE battery died a natural death after a similar event at the 7 or so year mark - door open and stereo on for too long, flat battery, after a charge it came back for a couple of months then died a slow death in a polite gentle way (ie. tossed up various messages related to HDC, xfer case, gearbox etc all indicative of low voltage). I then changed it out to an Amaron Pro (in deference to Tata I think) which is an Indian made battery highly recommended by my battery guy. It's a slightly lower capacity than the OE battery but works fine (also have a Optima D34 & traxide kit so that may help) and was a reasonable price (and I trust the battery guy as I've known him for 25+ years).

Nothing special required after the flat battery, just charge it shove it in and off you go (hopefully, or off you go to get another one if it doesn't come back).

Good luck navigating the maze of suitable electricity containers

My 3.5 year old Sport is on Battery number 2, and my old MY06 Sport was on its 3rd at the 130K / 5 year mark., so to get 7 years must be a very extraordinary milestone if it is the original one shipped

Thanks for the comments - I am not a Costco member so can't shop there.

After 2 hours at 12 amps the charger was still showing low charge but it did start first turn of the key.

I have now switched the charger to auto so will leave it over night and hopefully by tomorrow morning it will have gone into float mode.

The real test will be if it is able to hold the charge for any length of time but I am not having any expectation of it lasting long.

    Cheers

Dave at Goodyear Autocorrect Gunghalin owns a D4 and help me over the phone with a tow hitch problem
Although I didn't meet him his boys sorted out my other problem with my RRS (a two month old battery going flat) and it has been working fine since
From my experience a battery with 750CCA or better is needed as this was my issue with the dealer fitting a new battery of 620CCA only
The low battery warning light came on after a week sitting idle in the garage just after I bought it. Since the new battery has been installed I have had no issues
