Taking a while to post this. End result, sold the L320.....
The EGRs tested ok and located a diesel workshop that has tried to rebuild the same motor, he found the alloy head where the head gasket had blown the alloy had gone soft and was irreparable. His view was the engine was uneconomical to repair/rebuild.

However now have a 2008 RR Sport with the AJ petrol 4.4V8, and running perfectly (yes, really!) .......
