L322 problems

I have had my Td6 '02 model for nearly three years now. I've just returned from a 4300 km trip to Flinders Ranges and back. Did some proper 4wding up there, including the Mt Gill Track. The RR was fabulous for the long days' driving, and amazing off road. My friend in his Defender got stuck three times whereas the RR with traction control did it all with ease.

Best vehicle I have ever owned but I have had to spend a fair bit on maintenance. It had 160,000 km on it when I bought it and now has 198,000. I had to replace the front airbags and struts, drop links and lower bushes. Had a few electrical/electronic issues as well, including alarm triggering (front bonnet switch), air con fan failure (relay), and an aircon flap motor linkage. Also have a few of the known faults ie driver armrest, MID display pixel failure.

The engine and gearbox seem bulletproof however, and it is such a great car to drive both on road and off. I have done off road trips to Vic High Country, Bendethera, Blue Mts, Stockton Beach, etc and it is always amazing off road, and just so nice to drive around town and on the highway. Every other vehicle seems rough-riding and harsh by comparison.

Hi Davros,

Your trips sound interesting and its great to hear that these l322 Rangies do get to go offroad with some owners. I plan on doing a trip shortly which may see me towing my camper trailer all over vic/nsw/qld for possibly a couple of months or more if i can spare the time

I just returned from Barrington and once again the Rangie did not miss a beat although i did not go too serious offroad as i still have highway terrain tires fitted which will be getting swapped over for new coopers hopefully next week

Also interested in your flap motor linkage problem?.. I noticed tonight that the passenger side footwell in my car does not get much air flow at all compared to the drivers side which i will have to diagnose and fix. What were your symptoms?

I hear its lovely in the flinders. Would love to see some Rangie offroad/ travel pics ;)

im going to be selling my td5 fender soon and jumping into a LM :D:D:D:wasntme:,,

not realy a big problem but cheak that the elec steering movment works, and the wheel should retract up and back when the key is pulled out,

Good to hear that a Range Rover is being used for what it was designed for. On & OFF road.

Let me know how you go the Coopers Dave. 18'' ATR's I hope ???

Cant wait till I pick up my TD6

Thanks Dave. I am still looking, trying to find a low KM TD6 in top condition. I had a great vehicle ready to go, but my (ex) bank took forever to approve to dollars I needed, and it got sold :(. Now I have the funding approved, but haven't found 'The one' just yet....

I am being patient, and waiting until the right vehicle pops up.

I was lucky as only took 2 months to find mine.. was about to give up and just get a V8 Vogue as a much easier to find (and cheaper). Glad I found the TD6 for the right price. Took it to Gladstone last weekend.. 1500k trip and was brilliant.. averaged 9 litres per 100k. Can't wait to take it on a decent trip soon.

Done 10,000k's in the last 2 months and still look forward to driving it to work every morning.. Best car I've ever had (or driven) by far.

The a/c flap motor problem manifested when I found I cannot close the fresh air flaps and get recirculating air. Investigation in behind the pollen filter showed that the fresh air flap only closes on one side. Looking at the RAVE disc, and talking to service mechanic led to the knowledge that there is a single motor on one side (working), and the other side is connected by a cable (bowden or bowen cable?). The service guy thinks the most likely is that the cable sheath has come loose and is sliding around when the cable is pulled, instead of pulling the second flap. To fix he says the dash has to come out to access things and it would be very expensive, so I am putting up with it. Just means I can't shut out the smell of a garbage truck or oil-burning vehicle in front.

Dave, I will be interested to hear your report on Cooper tyres for the L322. I have Pirelli Scorpion ATRs and have been really happy with them. They are especially good on gravel and I can't criticise their offroad performance. 35,000 kms so far - they are good.

Previous owner had fitted Coopers on mine. I got rid of them, they were the by far the worst tyres I have had anything to do with.
