Thread: How to clear 'Check Brake Pads' message?

    How to clear 'Check Brake Pads' message?

    I've replaced the pads and the sensor on the front of my 2003 L322 Diesel, but the warning message and the red "Brake" light on the dash are still on.

    I tried a full Fault Clear Reset with my IIDTools from Gap Diagnostic, but no improvement.

    On other threads some say it resets itself, but others say it has to be cleared from the ECU. Guess I'm in the 'unlucky' group where it isn't going to clear just with a replaced sensor.

    If the IIDTool won't clear it what are my next options?

    BTW - I have emailed Patrick from Gap Diagnostic to see if he has any hints, but I've not yet heard back as it is probably the middle of the night in Canada ATM.

    There is a post on this somewhere - I'm just trying to find it - I used this procedure to clear mine when I needed to. You can use the buttons on the dash to go into the hidden menus - it is similar to resetting the service indicator, but uses a different menu I think...

    Actually - cancel that request.

    After turning the car off and on about 10 times it has magically cleared the error. Both the message and the red brake light have gone away - but I did NOTHING I tell ya!

    Give me a simple on/off circuit any day. I am sure there is an explanation deep inside the ECU, but it makes no sense to me!

    I'll keep looking - it is there somewhere! I think RangieBit will know - he helped me when I needed to clear the service indicator. Maybe once we find it, we can ask for it to be put in 'The Good Oil'.

    Found it! - This is the procedure I used - Thanks to RangieBit - it is something he posted about clearing all faults - it worked for me:-

    Pardon the obvious question here but did you repeat pressing the left button to get to test 21?

    The Right button you seem to have found (it's between the Tacho and the Temp gauge) and the Left button is the Trip Reset one between the Speedo and the Fuel gauge.

    OK then.

    *Press and hold Right button and turn ignition to first position (I or Accessory)
    Display should show "Check Control OK" then a short time later "Test Nr.01"
    *Press the Left button and you should see the car info in the display.
    Add the last FIVE digits of the car identity number together (NOT all 6!) to get a unique ID for your car.
    *Press the Right button repeatedly until you see "Test Nr.19"
    *Press and hold the Left button until you see the number matching the unique ID you calculated, then release.
    *Press the Right button to select this.
    *Press the Left button repeatedly until you see "Test Nr.21" - Reset All Defect Codes
    *Press Right button to reset the codes.
    Done!

    Well done that man!

    Even I had trouble tracking the procedure down again Gav.

    Of course, by the time I had, you had already tracked it down and posted it.

    Glad to hear you got the thing reset eventually Spudboy.

    It's supposed to be one of those "resets itself after a short time" type of things but who can really know with these strange Range Rover beasts.

    I got a reply from the Gap-Diagnostic guys about this, so thought I'd post up their info:

    Brake Pad Wear
    The front brake pads are fitted with a wear indicator system. The LH and RH pads are wired in series to the
    instrument pack which continuously monitors the circuit. When one or both pads wear to their allowed limit, the
    indicator circuit is broken and detected by the instrument pack software.
    The instrument pack illuminates the general brake warning lamp in a red colour. The instrument pack
    simultaneously, transmits a message to the LCM which displays 'CHECK BRAKE PADS' in the message centre.
    When the brake pads are replaced, the instrument pack withdraws the message and the warning lamp
    illumination when the ignition is in position II, the engine is not running and the vehicle is not moving for 30
    seconds.
