I am looking at a TD6 2002 HSE it in great condition and has a good service history,it has 182km on the clock but the only thing that is giving me second thoughts on buying this is the TD6 gearbox, all the research I have done thru the L322 forums seems to say it is a crap gear box only made for 340nm of torque even thought the RR is 390nm, are these gear boxes really that bad if they have been maintained or will it need a recon at 200km any feedback would be appreciated.

If it gets to 200KKM you will have done well. Having said that, don't let it put you off buying one, just haggle 5 or 6 thousand dollars off the price.
Lucky I did with mine as I needed it shortly after...
I wouldn't sell it for quids now, love it every time I drive it. I have never owned a car that puts a smile on my face like this one does. Easy to forgive them when they have issues, even if your wallet hates you...

So what we are saying is that all the TD6 RR will need a recon gearbox, no ones gearbox has gone by the 200km without have to have a rebuild, this is even if they have changed the oil on the trannies this problem still come up ?.
yes, do a search on uk forums too. the trans was not suited to the engine, period.
great vehicle, and a good trans to a point. excess servicing won't help imo, i heard of one at 180k that had never had a trans service, failed at 185k the same interval as one that had had all the care in the world...
it's just one of those 'suck it up' moments in life - td6 and 5l40e =

Have a read of GM 5L40-E transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It seems to be concise summary of issues: basically wrong gearbox for the job required. Typical that they (BMW) would settle on a dud specification for the gearbox together with a crap front end drive on the early L322 production which required a massive recall. For lighter, lower powered vehicles, the 5L40E was/is a reasonable box!
Interestingly the petrol version has the 5HP24 5sp ZF box which has also been proven to be problematic...

Thanks lads I will put it to the seller that the gearbox has about 5km to 20km before it needs a rebuilt and see will he come to the party.

I had my 04 td6 for 2months and the gearbox went, took the transfer case with it! Cost me a lot of money but as gav said, I would drive anything else, they are an amazing bit of kit and I use it off road regularly..don't be put off!
so the next question is,,,
after the 7K rebuild,,
can it then handle the 390NM??
or,
how much to make it handle 390( or more)?

1) still no, and 2) not yet a possibility unless someone comes up with a way to fit 5l50e internals.....
