JSP, I have had the same in gearboxes (the petrol ZF), where there were no error messages, no oil overheat warning, nothing but black, cooked transmission oil being pulled out after the box goes into limp home mode.
Hmmm looking back on mine - the TC being replaced has changed the car, I am still unhappy with it in general for hunting gears and also very unhappy the transfer case has leaked since it came back from having the TC replaced.
One thing I have picked up on, is when the car had been sitting for a while it took a good 5-10 seconds for drive to slowly come to life - did that for about 25k before I got it replaced. Now it has drive instantly from starting.
Never had a trans error at all, but the oil has come out black twice![]()

It is most likely IMHO, the transmission oil cooler, caused by LR coolant. The LR coolant is pink and leaves a white/pink residue that appears to inhibit heat transfer (2 gearboxes, oil coolers, one water pump, alternator, and four radiators tell me this, all covered in a white powdery crust).
Change the coolant and see if you can fit an aftermarket oil cooler also.

Quick question. Did all TD6 Range Rovers have the dodgy transmission, or was it upgraded at some point ?
I am interested in a 2006 model and I'm interested to know if it's in the same boat.
Thanks

Basically there was only one gearbox for all TD6's.
A (slightly) different part number for up to 3A113024 (very early), then same up until TDV6.
If its been serviced (100,000 km oil and filter change) and not much towing, then shouldn't be a problem.
Mine, 2003, had done 220,000km when I bought it; I believe it had a trailer behind it most of life as it was owned by a Vic media group, from new.
It was experiencing some weird gear changes and torque converter had quite high stall speed, but otherwise operated fair, but I replaced it before I reregistered it here in Qld. (Good excuse to wife to try an upgrade! Successful on both accounts.)
Is servicing the "sealed for life" transmission a common practice now ? Can anyone do it, or does it require specialist skill ( and tools ) ?

Any good transmission place that knows these trannies can do it - it is a very similar trannie that was in the Commodores not so long ago, so any place that is familiar with them can do it.
They will need the correct fluid - there is plenty about that around here too.

THat correct fluid--- all GM(H too) cars that use these trannies, and the 5L50E only specify ATF IV! GMH sell their reccommended ATF over counter and its just mineral based.
Repair manuals for 4L50/5L50 specify same.
I've been using Nulon synthetic ATF IV and its clean as day put in about 5K ago now.
