I personally recommend MTs over ATs. On a Patrol you would be deaf within a week, but on a RR with $120k of body insulation you will be happy. In my opinion, if you want to make it a contender - tyres are the first thing to do.
But of course it depends on the percentage on road and off road. I have Goodyear Wrangler Duratrak mudders on my P38 (32"s instead of stock 29"s) and they are capable, quiet, good in the wet (surprisingly) and lasting well on the road. Traction control is very capable, but is improved considerably by grabbier tyres.
