    DPF or no DPF? Which oil?

    I'm having a helluva time trying to find top-up oil for my 2012 4.4 TDV8. And I'm not even sure if my car has a diesel particulate filter fitted, does anybody know either way?

    The handbook is very specific about the type of oil required for DPF and non-DPF engines, and for cars fitted with DPF the local dealer can't tell me where I can buy it, other than to 'take a container down to the dealer and they'll sell me some.'

    The handbook says oil for DPF cars must meet Ford specification WSS-M2C934-B - Neither Supercheap Auto nor Coventrys have it.

    Any clue appreciated....

    Harlie, interesting you should say that...I ended up taking it to the dealer's service department, Gordon tried looking it up on Topix, couldn't find the answer, so invited me to put it up on the workshop hoist, whereupon he and two technicians spent 3 minutes peering at the car's underside and eventually declaring that nope, it didn't have a DPF fitted.

    Not knowing what a DPF actually looks like, I asked if that was a definitive answer and was assured that it was.

    So off I went and bought a litre of 5W-40 from Repco (having been assured by the Repco guy that it was also suitable for vehicles needing 5W-30) that was, according to the handbook, suitable for diesels without a DPF.

    I haven't yet poured it into the spout. Any advance on this? Anybody?

    I've an early TD6 and been using Nulon synthetics throughout the car, for the last 6 months and all seems good (even the transfer case!).

    But this is my choice.

    Interestingly Nulon.au have a site showing anti-friction comparisons with other oils; theirs come out trumps. BUT they did the "independant" tests.
    Nulon synthetic "EURO" line supposed to be suitable in most hi-tech diesels even with particulate filters.
    they have a range of viscosities in "Euro" synthetic oil.

    that is interesting... The TDV8 has a DPF in the UK/EU, it is the only way it can pass emissions – very surprised it doesn’t have it. If the 4.4 in aus has no DPF there is another reason to put it on the want list – DPF suck!

    There are numerous threads on FF about DPF problems on the 4.4, also numerous tuning companies selling DPF delete retunes for the engine ecu – if you remove a DPF you need to make sure the engine ecu doesn’t try to do a regen or the exhaust will end up on the road – hence a engine ecu reflash required

    What do they look like – a muffler. But they are located very close to the engine. The VW golf tdi has the DPF located pretty much under the base of the windscreen, can’t really see it from below, and have to remove several things to get to it from above.

    If there is a DPF, it should be talked about in the owners manual – there will be some guff about regens, and it will show up with diagnostic equipment. Dealer really should know without having to look

    If it ain't there thank you lucky stars.

    Harlie I can only assume the technicians at Barbagallo know their stuff. They certainly couldn't find any evidence of a DPF being fitted. It seems a bit ad hoc to me, Gordon told me that some Range Rover Sports sent to Australia have DPFs, others don't, he wasn't sure about the L322 though.
    In my owners manual (Page 219) it states that engines with a DPF fitted require a certain specification of synthetic oil (Wss-M2C934- while those without a DPF require an entirely different specification (913B from memory) and you can only use the non-DPF oil in a DPF-fitted car in an emergency, otherwise risk engine damage and thus warranty damage.
    So that's why I was being somewhat anal about finding the right specification of oil.

    off topic…….but another reason to own the 4.4 8 speed: did 550km today out to a few farms west of Brisbane - avge speed 74kmhr; fuel economy (yes, via dashboard so perhaps add10%) was 7.9l/100km. Wow!

    If you dont have a DPF this is a good choice of oil. There is a distribuor in Perth and costs a fraction of the Castrol equivalent. I use this in my Puma 2.2 and the 4.4 uses the same spec. Sorry about pic but it took 10 minutes to load

    One way to check if you have DPFis to look on the dash display for a DPF icon
    It will test for a few seconds during system check, if it is present.
