Thread: Tyres - Cooper LTZ 285/50/20

I ordered 4 Scorpion ATR 255 55 r19 yesterday getting fitted Monday. $374 each. I looked at the Coopers & then read the reviews . Not good aparently several failures around the bead ,blow outs etc. one guy was on his 3rd set of replacments under warranty. On the other hand the Pirellis get very good reviews . Just found out my spare is only 18'inch as well . Not sure how that will go although the diameter should still be 763 mm. I will get the tyre fitters to put it on on Monday and see if it uses the same wheel nuts etc.

Hmmm, well time will tell with the LTZ's I guess - more sidewall height and much higher load rating give me some comfort anyway.

There are some reports of lower sidewall problems with the 19" version but I've not seen any for either of the 20" versions.

After seeing how the upper sidewalls on my recently-fitted 19" Hankook RF10s are getting scuffed by rocks on 6km of gravel road each time I go out, I've earmarked the LTZ 285/50-20s for a RRV when I find the right vehicle.

So not impressed with 19" RF10s Graeme?

Is the benefit of 285/50/20 vs 255/55/19:
* 30mm increased, so 15mm taller side wall;
* 116 vs 111 load rating, so stronger side wall?

I was looking at 275/55/19 which are slightly taller but have 111 load rating and not very common.

Are 275/55/20s way too tall? 117 load rating and seems to be heaps of options in this size.

I thought 19" would be better/taller side wall. However as I've read before heaps more options in 20 & 18" rims.

285/50-20 theoretically have only 3mm more sidewall height so not the reason. The tops of the 19" RF10 (LI 111) sidewalls obviously touch the gravel so the LTZ's LI 116 might keep the upper sidewalls further away from the rocks and hopefully are a bit tougher too. Being a wider tyre might help keep the sidewalls tucked-in better too although on a 8.5" rim rather than the 19's 8" rim the difference might not be much. The RF10's have only been scuffed where the sidewalls are thicker anyway but I don't see any scuffing on my 17" Contis which are not LT.

Edit: If I get a RRV with 19" rims then I might give the Hankooks a try unless these don't do well in the expected limited time I'll have them on the D4. However as most late L322s have 20" rims I'd give the LTZ a try before taking drastic steps to fit 18" GOE rims.
