Thread: Went a little silly on some 33" tyres

In my opinion, any thing you can get your hands on must be better than the normal road tyres...i slashed 2 in 2 weekends of camping, one from a twig that i repaird and one from a pebble that put a gash in the sidewall the entire length!
I am sick of going 2kmh over gravel from fear of losing another $500 tyre

I am also hoping the new tyres will send me deaf before i get sick of them, I have the VASS engineer looking at them next week, should just be a matter of doing a speedo check and from what my silly phone app is saying the 33" has just "cured" the factory speed offset, engineer seems confident

So good news on a technicality with the legality of my tyres!

I had taken the spare off and sat it next to the original tyres for some reason, I noticed that the height of the 33" wasnt that much greater than the original, definitely not 75mm taller! So I took out the old tape measure and at 45psi (not on the car) the wheel measured in at exactly 80cm (31.4") mind blown, I knew there were some variations in the manufactures' sizes...but wow

The good news has just come across now that I have restudied the VSB14 document and at no point does it suggest that the increase in tyre size has to be as stamped on the sidewall! I immediately contacted the engineer I have been consulting and presto, he agrees, no inspection is even needed! As it sits (need to put some flares on) it is legal.

Food for thought when buying tyres, they aint always what it says on the tin!

Hey chaybra, what made you go for 20" rims rather than a smaller rim with larger sidewalls? Just curious

All the 18" after market alloy rims that I could find wouldnt fit over the brakes, I think only the factory ones would fit over. 20"s turned out to be only $50 more per corner and look a damn sight better

Also when I found out that they were a light truck construction I wasnt worried about the side wall height

yea fair enough, I got lucky and picked up a second hand set of 5 factory 18" rims for $400.
Having the light truck rating would be nice though

When you get a chance, measure your 33's and see how they really sit! It would be interesting

Sooooo, manufacturer specs of the tyre show 817mm OD (32.2"). I haven't had a chance to measure my spare off the car but the tyres on the car now are sitting at 785mm (30.9").


So 1" loss, although I haven't put air in them in a few months...

I would think these cars have stability and traction control, I thought it was illegal to change the track width with these features as it changes the parameters for the vehicle.
