    No more smoke, 3.6 TDV8

My 240,000km 3.6 TDV8 has general had some black exhaust smoke to varying degrees over the last 40,000kms I've owned it.

The only occasions it would not smoke was after a good hard drive and then she'd be clean for a little while. Then you go to accelerate to overtake on the freeway to overtake and there goes the black smoke again. I didn't like it even though i know with a diesel you should expect some. But trying to find a a quiet street to boot it and clean it out every week wasn't always practicable.

    It is now smoke free.

I removed the intake and cleaned out all the goo which is a mixture of intake and egr gasses. I replaced the orings and seals on the manifold. The original throttle orings were 2/3 the thickness of the new, the butterfly seal looked like it had been leaking and I also think the egr pipes may have had a leak.

I also replaced the Intercooler hoses with silicone hoses, the smaller hoses from the manifold cannot be purchased so I bought silicone hoses for another application from the local speed shop and cut them down (still cheaper than originals)

Now after driving for a week I cannot get smoke out of the exhaust.

I think the smoke was caused by the goo build up which is the result of the egrs gasses mixing with the intake, it settles in the intake, then under acceleration it forced through the engine and out the exhaust.

The egrs cause the problem but do not get dirty themselves.

    Hi

Do you have any pics of the intake manifold out and is it easy to do?

I have ben thinking of upgrading to silicon and wonder how difficult it is to undertake?

    Right, looked at that thread.

Think I'll wait until I see smoke before I undertake that, although feel its within my capabilities. Lol!

Silicon Hoses, best place to get the set?

Search Online for the larger hoses, I hear there's a wait though, and the small manifold hoses are not supplied, I had to buy from gogear (local speed shop) and cut to size.
