He did mine and freight was only $80 each way so in the grand scheme of things that doesn't add much. He also fitted an uprated 1st gear - out of a commodore - as part of the build.
    Thanks ,

i have read of him and furious on here but it seemed a few years back .

His Web site has some on ZFs and fittings, Coolers ETC and his Ebay only has a filter kit for the GM that i could see , i had a look on his facebook page and it`s more Territorys , coolers and ZFs .

I read that yours had a 3 year warranty but couldn`t find mention of the cost of the rebuild .

Do you know of any of his reco GM L322 autos doing in the vicinity of 240,000km ?

I don`t doubt that he knows what he`s doing or that there is anything wrong with his work but time and kilometers tell what`s happening .

Mines done 70,000 since he rebuilt it and when last serviced was still in good condition inside but the new style valve body wasn't available when he did mine, so I doubt mine will last 200,000 but I certainly got 3 years use without issue.

You would need the uprated valve body to get 200,000 plus KM on it, the old one would simply wear away in that time, even with the sonax valves in it. The valve body wear is what causes all the issues in this box.

Whoever you get to build it, spend the extra on a new uprated valve body. I have no doubt that with this that they would last those sort of KM.

PM me if you want to know about a place in Melbourne you shouldn't get to do it - nothing I'll go into here, but there are reasons why I wouldn't.

do you know who makes the new style valve block and does it still need work to fit the sonnax valves ?

I`m waiting on replys about 2 cars both in Melbourne .

I`m sure some sellers don`t really want to sell and if they do they don`t make it easy .

It seems there are quite a few 04MY cars with over 200,000km on them still on the original auto .

At this point i thank them for there time but they seem unaware of what could be instore . I may be able to revisit in the future but at present i don`t have the information .

jsp , if you don`t mind and you read this would you PM me and tell me the name of the place in Melbourne that you wouldn`t recommend , i remember you not being happy with a mob in Melbourne . If you`d prefer not that`s ok too .

    Cheers

The new style valve body is a straight replacement and comes with valves. The Sonax valves are not required - they are only a slightly oversized mushroom head seal that is a stop gap in the old worn valve body. The old valve body was made of very soft material that wore quickly as the KM went up and no one derived the boxes as they were 'sealed for life'.

Personally I'd be very wary of a vehicle with 200,000 on it that's on the original box. If you buy one like that, make sure it's cheap enough that a $7,000 repair bill isn't going to hurt you.

You got links to the ones you're looking at by any chance?

Without seeing them i think the silver or the older black would be the ones .

I think the shape is good but i actually like the light green colour .

The biggest problem is the interior colours , i really don`t like the art deco type the ones that have 3 or 4 flavours but i think they would be a love or hate type of thing anyhow .

if its a late 2005 model, chances are it has the upgraded TC lock up clutch and less prone to failure. With mine, first thing i did when i bought it was replace the TC with another heavy duty lock up clutch with improved clutch material. the poor control design the the computer allows for alot of clutch slip (up to 80kph) before full lock up. this inturn breaks down the clutch itself and that material is then passed thru the valve body on its way to the filter and in some cruel way created the clutch to slip even more buy reducing the clutch pressure ending in even more wear...what a horrible box.

    ...
    .
this is not entirely accurate - the TC is a symptom (not the problem) of the fundamental design flaw of the GM box - the value body.

Comments above about the valve body are on the money.

Furious in Syd and WSA in BNE are the only people I spoke to when researching who had the nail on this issue. The BNE guy was doing all the warranty work for BMW dealers so no surprise he new what was going on, in the day when this first came to light, he was working with info from the factory and his rebuilds were going out with a BMW warranty....

Everyone else points to the TC because that is what has been torn apart when it stops working, when they crack the box open, it is the only visible issue (RRPhil's tear-down on FFRR is a prime example). However, it is torn apart because the line pressure has dropped reducing the clamping force of the TC lockup clutch. The valve body seems fine until it is tested on a very expensive test bench - which none of the trans shops have, they have to send it away...

As one of the few here who opened the box on the first sign of TC slip (as apposed to waiting for it to stop), I can report that the factory TC clutch looked perfect with the exception of faint heat marks from a day of slipping. However, when the valve body was tested for pressure on all channels it was significantly below spec. Most shops don't even look at the valve body and regulator, they just see the TC clutch and tell you that a heavy duty unit is needed and put it back together - and the owner is right back where he started in very little time at all with a failed TC clutch. Then he is on the forums sprooking about how the TC clutch is not up to it.

After the different valve body and regulator goes in you are no longer limited to the dex fluid either.

With the line pressure restored you will notice it behave differently. Most notable, the factory spec talks about TC lockup in 3rd, 4th and 5th. It does that now.

My TD6 has a 510nm remap and gets a lot of towing duties, the physical TC clutch was never an issue.

My new box is factory rebuilt but only has a one year unlimited klms warranty .When it changes into first there is a slight clunk that the old box only seemed to have in the week or so before it died. BOR have been informed and i'll keep my eye on it. I assume this box is built to the later specs. I have to get it serviced in another 80000 kays.
