It shouldn't clunk, I have to concentrate to feel the changes.

Later specs? Depends who built it. Given that the Strasbourg factory disappeared years ago, and the GM powertrans subsidiary that produced the gearboxes was bankrupted out of existence soon after, the notion of a "factory rebuild" is kind of impossible... Where did you buy it? I know who was doing the warranty work for the Australian BMW dealers and their "factory rebuilds" were coming out of a workshop in SW Brisbane - they now have local arrangements and send the box off to a local shop.

When I looked into it in 2012/13 there was no one building a "factory" box for the LR dealers, they all had local arrangements too.

There is no way I would go 80km between fluid and filter changes either.

I will be up your way this weekend, haven't decided which car will have the duties yet - the fast and ridiculously economical one that shakes all internal organs and feels like my arse is dragging on the road, or the slower and very comfortable TD6

Mine has a small clunk when it drops back to first when slowing down to a stop - more like a harsh change. Rhys from Furious Performance (who rebuilt the box) told me this would be the case as it has an uprated first gear from the dunny door. Every other change is smooth and always has been since the rebuild.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Only what in aus? There is no factory....

What you two are describing is the commodore-ising, the different 1st gear - a mod which I happily passed on. Your actually backing up my point that there is no "factory" transmission. If it is LR factory, LR Aus will be getting these rebuilt locally. Mate of mine ended up at the dealer in woolongong about 2 yrs ago and they sent him to a local trans shop, openly said there was no dealer part available - neither LR or BMW have sourced rebuilds from OS - even when they were still under warranty

Harlie, does your TD6 with 510nm have a standard TC or HD TC? What is its history now? Say, how many Kms since rebuild with new valve body and reg?

haha - what factory?? you do realise that BOR can call it a factory rebuild when it has come from their own shed?

Mate, sorry to say but the factory closed in about 2007 - the company is long gone. There is no factory that produced these transmissions in existence - the global failure rate of this transmission in every vehicle it was fitted to is unbelievably high (even the gutless 4 pot 318i), some might even think the company was wound up to avoid a huge legal fight... Someone is having a lend, and from the sounds of it, you have the same 1st gear that is retrofitted to the V8 commodores (as Gav talks about), which is a common local modification here in aus - the US tend to add the 5L50 internals which include extra frictions plates.

Anyway that point is not really important, What is important is giving the rebuilt unit the best possible chance of going long. And that starts with regular fluid and filter changes to give it the best opportunity of retaining line pressure - 40K. Given that you don't know what valve body is in there you would be well advised to stick with the non synthetic dex spec fluid.

If the valve body has been changed (which is a local rebuild feature only done by a couple of shops) than you can safely run a couple of different fully synthetic fluids - the original GM valve bodies must run the dex spec fluid because of wear to the soft alloy - it also chews out the pressure regulator body.

It is the original TC that was shipped to SYD and "rebuilt" had a new clutch fitted and I did have the impeller and stator adjusted to reduce the stall speed quite significantly. In saying that the new clutches have a different friction material these days that is more durable and heat resistant than they were in the day - that is standard with any quality clutch. I made a ton of calls to every expert listed about HD converters and discovered a lack of knowledge about these boxes - not one person I spoke to who was pushing a HD converter mentioned testing the valves (HD converter will fix all the problems), and the 2 guys that did talk about testing valves both said the HD converter was not needed, but if you really want one.

As I said, it was opened at first sign of slippage, I didn't keep driving it until it lost drive (which is when the valves clog up with debris), everything was in near perfect condition except for the pressure tests on the valves - even the friction packs look great.

65km now, a lot of heavy towing. Dropped fluid for the 2nd time @ 60 and it looks and more importantly smells like new. Best advice I can give is monitor your fluid, if it smells burnt, she is starting to slip. Also the syn fluids are better at retaining pressure, so once the valve body and regulator are changed to a more robust material, the better fluids can be used which would also be helping.

I have owned the car for 9 years, and I always thought it odd that the manual talks about TC lockup in 3rd, 4th and 5th as it had only ever locked up in 5th. Ever since the line pressure was restored it happily locks up in 3 & 4 now.

Anyway - it looks like this is not what the group want to hear - so I will shutup and let those who did keep driving until it lost drive to carry on.
