If you own a TDV8 around 100000km I'd think seriously about getting a spare alternator ready for replacement.
I paid more than I could have if I ordered it online but needed it done and trust my mechanics.
Plus it's not a quick easy replacement and I needed my car running quickly again.
So the whining noise was definitely the alternator complaining it wasn't happy anymore.
The alternator sits below the item I posted in the first photo. So that's where the noise would have been coming from.

Yes good advice. Did you keep the old one? Could get it refurbished and keep as a spare.
