    GM 5L40E oil

    G`day ,

could you tell me what oil you are using in your GM 5L40E transmission , or have a preference for .

Searching it seems the original Texaco oil was a dextron 3 .

Gm now say that these transmissions from 2006 forward should use Dextron 6 ( not RR specific just the transmission ) they also say dextron 6 is backward compatable .

Dextron 6 is under GM licence so many can make it or their blend of but there is much conflict in the blurbs put out and RR generally don`t get a mention .

Since the last of these transmissions in an L322 is as i understand the same as the earlier ones , i would assume they are all covered by this 2006 forward statement ,would you think this is correct ?

    Thanks

I use the Penrite full synthetic atf which exceeds dex 6 and merconIV etc etc etc.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Thanks Justin ,

Penrite is one of the ones that i don`t find clear .

They have ATF FS which exceeds DEX3H which they say suits the 2004/6 VZ Holden .

For the 2006 and later VE Holden they say ATF LV FS which meets DEX6

I would have thought like the RRs that these transmissions would be the same 5L40E in each M/Y but i don`t know .

I also realise it`s not a big thing and any of these oil type will work ok but if i can i`d like to find the most compatable .

    Again , thanks

I have to agree with JustinC.

The Penrite full synthetic is upto scratch and after talking to penrite they advise they will stand behind it if any issues.

I can advise I know a car which had dexron3 put in it and it lasted 2,000k's before the box gave out, as the "reputable transmission specialist" said that was what the box needed, they lost the claim against Castrol for a bad batch of oil.

Mine currently has the landrover branded stuff as it was recently done at a land rover independent, but I have a few spare bottles of the penrite for the next flush.

    Thanks jsp ,

i`m still not up with it though , are you saying the older full synthetic that is rated better than Dex3H is the Penrite to use , rather than the newer Dex6 Penrite ?

I pretty much worked out the the BMW dealer oil is AC Delco , which is GM .

Do you know what the Landrover oil is as it won`t be Landrover is it possible that it is also AC Delco , do you think ?

    Thanks

    Thanks ,

I`m not disputing what JC says , if it reads like that it`s not the intent .

i`m asking and trying to clarify for my own piece of mind .

IF DEX6 which is FS is better or more suited why use the earlier DEX3H which is also FS , the DEX6 according to Penrite is also backward compatible .

So why is the earlier type more suitable , is it something to do with seals ETC ?

I think Penrite had SIN ATF before any of these but it has been made redundant with the upgrades . i guess .

Multivehicle FS ( MVFS ) is also a newer one but not suited to the Hydramatic type so there is no need to discuss if that can be used but that is stated plainly in the blurbs .

The reason i use DEX is that the transmission is GM and so is DEX
