I'd go parts with you but I want the same bit
I'm looking at using the M57/ZF combination in my D2 yes.
If it's of assistance, can't remember the name off the top of my head but if you find Sheldons thread about 6l90e Isuzu adapters he and I briefly mention an aftermarket tcm controller that claims to allow full electronic integration with the host.

there are a few stand alone computers out there for the 6l80's and the zf 6hp. full can bus integration though? hmm hopeful i think.
why not use a manual box for the D2? (I know i prefer autos) but you are not limited as much as we are. there are adapters for the m57 to the y61 patrol box from europe

Patrol box won't fit a d2 without cutting the floor plus I like autos
Plus the zf bolts right up to the m57, and then all I need is a throttle input for the tcm and a software adjustment and it should work fine.
The tcm controller I plan on using is used in high end swaps like Aston Martins without any loss of function so it should be okay

The X5 runs a different TC - the NV125, not the NV225 the RR runs - it's only a single speed trasfer case (hence the 1 in its designation), not the 2 speed version, but the bolt pattern is the same, although I never found out if the splines were also the same - someone of the FFRR forum said they may be different, but never had that varified.

I did a bit of research on all of this when I was looking at putting the 6 speed manual box from an X5 into the Rangie.

Only issue with the X5 manual box is while the box itself can be built to happily laugh at 1000Nm, the weakness is then moved into the DMF and clutch, and as with most boxes it seems, you can only go so large a clutch with a dmf, tough clutches generally go into solid mass flywheels. A quick search of any bmw forum reveals that 9/10 people aren't happy with the SMF, complaining of harshness and vibrations. Not what I'd want with an RR. So unless you want to cap yourself at 580Nm (i mean why even bother ) you start to run into 'knock on' issues.

It's all a moot point for me now anyway. If an easiy she auto conversion can be sorted, that sorts 99% of these vehicles issues out.
