    GM Gearbox Drama

Okay, this is a rant, so standby... I have 255,000k on my 2004 HSE TD6 and at 150,000k the previous owner had the GM auto overhauled. After driving about 2,000k in 4 days, it failed again in dramatic fashion. No drive through the transmission at all, nuffin'! A G/B failure confirmed by the mech and given that we had done quite a bit of roadside troubleshooting, I have to trust him. So it gets yet another overhaul at about $5,500.00. My whinge is this... Land Rover and their then owner BMW go to all the trouble of designing and building a $100.000 vehicle, put in a great M57 dieso engine, and bolt a rotten GM box behind it. What possessed them to do that when they had the good sense to use the ZF unit on the V8? Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty of stories about ZF's but I'm just annoyed that what is a great vehicle, smooth, safe, well appointed and capable is dragged down by a lousy commercial decision that bites owners down the track (at 10pm in Warwick, QLD in my case). Anyway, when I get a report, I'll let you all know what went wrong.
    Thanks for listening

Don't know how that gearbox was signed off by BMW given the Td6 that powers the BMW X5 with the same gearbox has higher power and torque figures. The maximum stated inputs for the GM unit are exceeded by the L322 variant

There are some strengthening tweaks than can be done and druven with some form of mechanical sympathy it is highly likely they will last ok. Most of them never get serviced etc so you can't expect them to last. Towing in sport mode is the very first thing that should be done and locking out 5th gear when working hard. I am pushing about 490Nm through mine and so far so good but has only been about 10,000km . Car has done 130k now and will shortly get an upgraded torque converter, and new pressure solenoid and oil cooler.

I'm hoping it will see 250k.

Yes that's right, BUT the X5 doesn't have low range, so there are Can-bus issues with the ECU etc.
