During a slow, hard lock u-turn to the right would be expected to hear a clicking CV joint, but perhaps requiring a person outside listening. I assume that the axle nut has been checked as being tight.
Hi Guys,
I have an issue requiring some assistance. Late 2004 build, 212km, I've owned the car for coming up 10 yrs.
Clicking noise sounds like a screw or stone in the tyre.
* coming from LHS - can't hear it at all out the drivers' side windows
* increases frequency with road speed (like a screw/stone)
* under load does not change it (no change if in neutral)
* can hear in a straight line, gets louder during right hand bends, softer and disappears during left hand bends. I assume as weight increases on left side it gets louder???
* started about 3000km ago gradually getting worse
I have removed tyres and checked, pulled brakes apart and all looks good. Wheel spins fine with no sign of movement
Can't feel any movement in CV joints and no sign of cracked boot/grease leak.
There is no droning which is typical of a wheel bearing issue but this is my only thought left??.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks.

thanks Graeme - your assumption is of a standard above mineI will check that tonight.
No noise during low speed hard lock turns - the classic symptoms we would expect from a front CV aren't there. However, everything I read about a wheel bearing isn't there either....

I don't know what the L322 is like but the D3/L320 handbrake cables run through a stainless steel hook. Attached to the rear lower control arm.
Once (after some work) the handbrake cable wasn't reinstalled into this hook an would rub against the wheel, and the wheel weights. It sounded just like a (big) stone in the tyre, and slowly wore through the cable sheath.
If the L322 is similar I'd double check that too - I didn't notice first time i looked!
Cheers
Dan
If the rim is steel then it could be cracked but you would probably have noticed that when the wheel was off.

see if the noise goes away when you lightly apply the brakes.
Update:
the car has been to the local ind LR specialist who initially scratched their heads after having the car all day - however we are now looking at the LHS inner CV.
Interesting, it hasn't got any worse since it initially started.... And there's been a couple thou K towing.
Q: do I put a new CV in or do I get a full shaft (both inner and outer CVs already assembled on shaft ready to slide in)

Have you tried changing the spare wheel over for the suspect tyre/wheel?

Assuming the rear brake setup is the same as the Discovery 4, have you removed the rear brake drum housing for inspection?
I have had small pebbles, tiny sticks flick into the drum housing via a small hole in the rear of the drum housing.
Assume the purpose of the hole is to drain water, but anyway, when things get in there they cause all manner of clicks, squeaks and groans.
