Yes it sound like a PIA job. My Indy outsources the job to a place with a huge press.

It's not just the huge press , its supporting the whole shebang while pressing, without damaging it...🙄
This one is firmly in the SEP zone for me. ie Someone Else's Problem [emoji14] I'll be farming it out as a few other things due then also. However I thought the fronts were a gen3 type bolt-in jobbie (easy), where the rears required the big press (not easy)?
Thanks guys. I now have a bit of a list of possible problems when I eventually choose a car. I will probably do this in the next 12 months. This gives me plenty of looking time.
Sorry I should have clarified! Sudden or progressive loss of power steering. There are some horror stories about loss of steering. There were calls for a modification ; to enable a safer response.

Gday Laurie.
I think the lack of power steering was because the motor would shut down with little warning.
When my alternator packed it in, I was about 300km from home. I tried recharging the battery and turning off as much as I could. I also hooked up a multimeter to the centre console cig lighter power to monitor battery charge.
As soon as I started I could see the voltage dropping. With in minutes it was under 12v and I pulled over before it stopped. Just as I did the Xmas tree dash lit up and it was game over.
Thankfully I had RACQ extra care and the $900 tow fee was paid for. Only a few months earlier I was a similar distance from home when the trans output shaft stripped. Another $900 tow fee covered. So I got very good value from the membership fee that year.
