TDV8 3.6 longevity

My 3.6 has had an oil flush nearly every service (10k km). The motor has always had this subtle intermittent or inconsistent rattle on idle and acceleration. The motor is otherwise smooth and quiet. I assumed it was just a normal operating noise.

I recently did an oil flush using the Cost Effective Maintenance flush. Since the engine rattle noise has gone. The oil dipstick is also staying very clean since the flush.

Anyone have any theory on the effect of the flush and what the noise was?

I’m wondering if the turbo has been starved of oil and the noise was the turbo fan hitting the housing, and the oil flush has cleared a blockage which has resolved the oil starvation issue. So no more noise. The noise was more on the driver side which seems to be the more at risk turbo.

I’m now thinking this noise could have been injector rattle. I also put a few tanks of injector cleaner through around the same time. So it could have also had an effect around the same time as the oil flush.

ok,, I may have tried a different grade oil,, which may not have found the problem if you are correct----
and please tell us what a injector rattle is?

Hi - just revisiting this thread...trying to work out the best EGR solution as there are conflicting opinions about whether to use a blanking kit or emulator for this motor...thoughts?

Also, are the turbo drains much of a problem?

I was surprised how small the turbos are on this thing...but they clearly work ok...first car I've owned where I'm in no hurry to look for performance upgrades... Getting rid of the collector box at the end of the exhaust system is tempting to get more V8 burble...but I also kinda like wafting along with more muted grumble...

Mine has about 292,000km.

I have emulators, which which works ok, but now think blanking plates and a remap may be the preferred EGR solution.

I consider the oil flush to be a good remedy for turbo oil drain issues. I also consider 10,000k oil changes with good quality/correct spec oil helps with turbo bearing wear, and fan movement/damage.

Just my unscientific thoughts from ownership.

I have the EGR's blanked off in my car, the initial turbo lag is gone and it is a little better on fuel ! depending how you now use your right foot. The main reason I used plates instead of just a re-map ( I don't have any error message ) is that if the EGR's break and deposit bits in the system it won't get ingested into the motor. Plenty of horror $ stories from the UK about this. I'm with RAR110 on this flush engine before oil change, do a Revive/Terraclean carbon clean every 18-24 months. Personally I prefer Revive as I can do it myself and it's used by the Aviation Industry to clean Jet engines; so I believe it not only works but has been fully vindicated by airlines in their maintenance schedules.
In regards to the turbo drain lines as stated in the previous post good oil and regular changes depending on usage. Another item that effects the turbo drain hoses is that many people don't undo the 2nd sump plug when doing an oil change, this plug is below the return lines and as sludge builds up the flow decreases. This has the potential reduce oil flow and increase pressure in the turbo with the possibility of a seal failure in the turbo. It's in a bugger of a place, so be prepared for some spill unless you use some flexi hose or similar. I have considered using one of those drain taps, but haven't heard of anyone with a RR TdV8 doing it, just the Supercharged guys.

I also use CEM's FTC Decarbonizer and CRD Fuel Enhancer for Common Rail Engines when I fill up. I carry a premixed bottle so all doses are correct. Our car is mainly used for trips etc, so this is the best time to use additives, if more running around town I would use a different regime.There are other reputable brands around, it's just that the local CEM agent is close to work .

I also have blanked off the EGR's, I haven't had them mapped out as yet but no codes, lights, bings or bongs. I bought the car in Jan 2020 , I have done 20k since and have had no real problems. I did a gearbox flush and service, replace the trans pan, rocker cover seal, turbo hose and a couple of other small jobs. As has been stated, 10k oil change, I do trans at 20k. Use all the correct oils, not cheap substitutes and you should have sooooo much fun in these cars. I have to get a IID BT to help with maintenance and problems, should they arrive. I am now coming up to 200k and booked in for service. I love this thing.

Hey Bike Man, hows the TDV8 going after the 200k service... Have you still got it, ? And have you remapped at all yet..?
