The load of the relay coil may trigger a globe fail alarm if that circuit is monitored. You could use a solid state relay which has a high impedance on the 'coil' terminals (there isn't actually a coil in them) should a standard relay cause issues. What do you need to run off the relay - assuming a light of some description?

I wonder if I could run two lights off one transformer.

Depends on the VA of the tranny,but i don't think so.
Post up the figures and the current rating of the lights and we can work it out.

Thanks Paul, you're as handy as windsock. I could wire it up, as windsock suggested, in a bucket of water. That should circumvent the smoke issue.

Ok, couple of things - I would highly doubt those driver boxes are waterproof based on their design and how the cables run out of them. Second, there no actual info on the LED wattage of those 50mm lights - does the actual light housing have a wattage on them anywhere?

Solid state relays get expensive if they have to pass large currents.

I would try a standard auto relay in circuit first and see what happens. It won’t hurt anything, you may just get a fault code if it won’t work. This shouldn’t be a hard latching fault so removal of the relay should clear this.

Then you can look at solid state options if this turns out to be the case.

Maybe Ian’s question explains something that my L322 does.

I wired a relay to one of the reverse lights to operate an LED floodlight as a reversing light.

If the headlights are switched on, then high beam comes on as well when I select reverse.

Is there a reverse light pin on the trailer plug on those? If so that circuit should be able to operate something without any canbus issues, shouldn’t it?
