Welcome Familyman - this is definately the right place for real world advice about Land Rovers and other brands too. Mostly it’s unbiased on all brands (with a Land Rover focus). Some are too quick to judge as on any Internet forum, but you can choose the advice that’s right for you.
While the Discovery 5 doesn’t suit my purposes, you will get excellent advice in the D5 forum by many members who the D5 is perfect for.
$100,000 vehicle purchase is a very big decision. I would be doing the same thing as you if I was new to Land Rover - researching all the options. All the best with your decision, whatever is the right vehicle for you.
Cheers

Welcome Familyman, please ignore the trolls.
As said before, you can't compare an LC or Prado to the D5. The D4 is more "truck" like and comparable to the Toyotas but not the D5 which is a different beast all together. The D5 is a modern, lightweight (construction), high tech, luxury 4WD.
I expect the reliability of the D5 (I drive an MY18 now) to be just as good as the D3 and D4's I've driven for the last 11 years. Never a breakdown or major issue with them.
First I've heard of "major" dramas with the launch cars. No dramas with electrics (are you thinking of a D1 or 2 when you mention this?) D3, 4 and 5 didn't have any electrical issues.
Yes the media system in the D5 (like the D4) has its issues. It works and sounds great (D5 HSE) but it does do weird things.
I cannot and would not recommend a dealer.............but I wouldn't for any other brand either so don't read too much into that.
For an Independent you can go the Tunstall's at Cleveland. Greg's always serviced the Discos and RSS' from my work place (2 of each at current count).
Go the V6. I wish I had. The SD4 is fine for what I do (not towing) but its not as smooth as the 6. But then I was driving an SDV6 D4 before the D5 so maybe I'm biased? There are conversations going around about an oil dilution issue with the 6 but recent posts say this is fixed.
Ask on the d5 form they will give you the best view on reliably but I would think it would compare very well with Toyota as for an independent land rover machinic sbl automotive in Acacia ridge he has about 20 years experience with land rover and is by my experience very good at what he does good luck don't listen to the knockers .
