Welcome Familyman - this is definately the right place for real world advice about Land Rovers and other brands too. Mostly it’s unbiased on all brands (with a Land Rover focus). Some are too quick to judge as on any Internet forum, but you can choose the advice that’s right for you.

While the Discovery 5 doesn’t suit my purposes, you will get excellent advice in the D5 forum by many members who the D5 is perfect for.

$100,000 vehicle purchase is a very big decision. I would be doing the same thing as you if I was new to Land Rover - researching all the options. All the best with your decision, whatever is the right vehicle for you.

    Cheers

MR auto in Redcliffe are my go to guys, and i have been using them for the last 15 yrs or so.

I live the other side of town, but they are worth the drive.

    FWIW,and only my opinion,i wouldn't use a dealer,apart from warranty work.

Welcome Familyman, please ignore the trolls.

As said before, you can't compare an LC or Prado to the D5. The D4 is more "truck" like and comparable to the Toyotas but not the D5 which is a different beast all together. The D5 is a modern, lightweight (construction), high tech, luxury 4WD.

I expect the reliability of the D5 (I drive an MY18 now) to be just as good as the D3 and D4's I've driven for the last 11 years. Never a breakdown or major issue with them.

First I've heard of "major" dramas with the launch cars. No dramas with electrics (are you thinking of a D1 or 2 when you mention this?) D3, 4 and 5 didn't have any electrical issues.

Yes the media system in the D5 (like the D4) has its issues. It works and sounds great (D5 HSE) but it does do weird things.

I cannot and would not recommend a dealer.............but I wouldn't for any other brand either so don't read too much into that.

For an Independent you can go the Tunstall's at Cleveland. Greg's always serviced the Discos and RSS' from my work place (2 of each at current count).

Go the V6. I wish I had. The SD4 is fine for what I do (not towing) but its not as smooth as the 6. But then I was driving an SDV6 D4 before the D5 so maybe I'm biased? There are conversations going around about an oil dilution issue with the 6 but recent posts say this is fixed.

we are a long term Toyota owners (Cruiser and Prado) and "sadly" never had any issue with them, so chaging to anything else is hard.
However have seen the new discovery 5 and it's much more nicer than Prado kakadu. however we are been bombarded by "dont buy Land Rover" as its reliability is exact opposite of Toyotas, etc

What i want to know is
    - Are newer plates (MY17/MY18) Disco 5 still has major dramas associated with Lauch Year cars (Electrics/ Media system specifically).
    - Any Good Brisbane Land Rover dealerships to recommond (South East)
    - Any indipendant Brisbane based Land rover garages, we can use to do pre purchase inspepection on MY17 Cars.

Lastly, any known major issues, i really should be looking to fix on TDV6 on Disco 5, we must fix (Car will not be used for towing; but loved test drive in V6 Diesel)

Budget 95k-100K driveway is our limit as its around same as Prado Kakadu.

Thank you so much in Advance.

Which air-con package did you go with...I recall a thread about one of the zone options not being the best in relation to the vents although they may have fixed this

Ask on the d5 form they will give you the best view on reliably but I would think it would compare very well with Toyota as for an independent land rover machinic sbl automotive in Acacia ridge he has about 20 years experience with land rover and is by my experience very good at what he does good luck don't listen to the knockers .

He is kitting his D5 out quite nicely, I think he won a category at the 70th.....he doesn’t do servicing but does a fair bit with aftermarket gear. Oh and could probably give advice on servicing options.
    Thanks.

Here's someone who's driven toyotas for a long time and is now considering a LR product because they feel it is a nicer place to be. Seems to me he is wanting to buy and is doing the due diligence required for any significant purchase. I think he deserves a bit of credence for actually going against what he is comfortable with and questioning what his friends are saying.

If there is any trolling to be had then it will quickly get sorted out in due course. Give the man the benefit of the doubt.

@familyman, this is certainly the right place to come for advice. There is a specific forum area for D5 info which this thread will likely end up when it has run its course. So have a look in there for some info too.

No. I had the extended warranty (an Allianz product from memory) on the D3 because I thought it would help with resale. One small claim worth $800 I think. Didn't bother with the two D4's as the D3 was reliable. Never had a problem with either D4 outside of warranty.
