Does anyone know if there’s a model of crossbars that will fit the Disco 5 without flush rails?

The only thing that fits the roof without having rails is the Land Rover versatile roof rack as in the first post in this thread. None of Rhinorack, Prorack, Thule or Rola show any availability on their websites of roof racks that don't use the factory rails. I guess that doesn't mean much, as the Rola site didn't show a Disco 5 option at all. Maybe call the companies direct and ask?

    Versatile Roof Rack for D5

When I bought the SD6, I forgot to include roof rails in the negotiation. Of course, I would have done a significantly better deal before finalising the total price. Afterwards, I was quoted $2,900 with Ditch Finishers & Cross Bars fitted and $2,250 without Cross Bars.

All of a sudden, the OEM LR "Versatile Luggage Rack" at $3,500 fitted, went from being "out of the question" expensive, to a possibility. Then I realised that it kept the weight and height of the platform lower without roof rails as it bolted into the same holes to which the roof rails would have attached. This further piqued my interest.

This was a few days before delivery so I had a quick scan around and could not find another option that would do the same. Then I considered saving money by buying LR knock-off rails off eBay or similar and going with a standard aftermarket platform. That got messy quickly as I couldn't guarantee that other roof rails were supplied with all the required bits and bobs (like the aforementioned Ditch Finishers) or would fit at all, let alone properly. And I'd have to fit it! When I added the cost of a platform, I could see myself not saving as much as I thought not getting what I now wanted so I pulled the trigger on the LR Versatile.

The financial hit was a temporary and sunk cost that passed. Had I ended up with a dodgy system that was a bit cheaper but heavier and higher, it would have annoyed me every time I looked at it. I'm now thankful that I forgot to order roof rails - it's a neat and low profile solution to bypass them. There may be other options in the market now but for anyone considering a new purchase, I'm sure you could do better to include the Versatile Rack in your total package negotiations. Maybe in non-COVID times at least

Attached pictures were not for the purpose of showing the rack but they do give you an idea.
Hi DocDisco,

Apologies for the delay - haven't looked at email for a while.

I had similar questions about fitting accessories when I got mine but LR couldn't offer any info. I went with it under time pressure & figured that all racks are fairly similar when it comes to accepting accessories though the LR OEM rack did make me nervous.

As it turns out, it had similar set up as others I assume, with channels in each cross bar that will take a T-bolt with the threaded end facing up to receive a nut or into which you can drop a square nut and bolt into that. I had to fit a Thule Pod with the claws that secure by winding onto the cross bars and a 2.1m Rhino rack half width steel cage and both were no problem.

The cross members can be loosened off and slid forward or back to meet the claws of the pod.

I bought some standard Rola T-Bolts to fit the cage, using the metal plate and hand tighteners that come with the standard Rhino Rack U-Bolt set (pictured).

The only issue is getting your bolt length and bolt size to match when mixing and matching different fasteners but they all seem to be M6 or M8 from memory so stick to one. I had to go back & forward a few times to get the right fit so I would recommend taking your rack to the shop selling the fasteners to make it easier to to do in one go.
