Thread: Solar panel cable for auxiliary battery

When will this lock down end... My latest Covid Project was to run a cable from the rear of the D5, into the car and up behind the back seats. It is twin 8B&S and terminated on both ends with red Anderson plugs. Its purpose is to allow me to plug portable solar panels - I have 2 x 200 Watt and 1 x 100 Watt that I carry on camping trips - to charge my Auxiliary Battery which is in a battery box and only in the car when needed to run the 40 litre Waeco in the back of the car. The internal end is coiled up and dropped in the space behind the rear seats along with the cable from the starter battery which also plugs into the battery case, via a black Anderson plug.

It will only have a cable pugged in to the external end when the car is parked and using the solar panels to charge the battery so I decided to place it vertically, pointed down, to make plugging the Anderson plugs together easier. Also, the weight of the solarpanel cable will pull down and keep the terminals tightly in contact.



You can see the red Anderson plug poking down. It will be capped when not in use. Under the Land Rover trailer plug is the Anderson plug which connects to the camper trailer and the round plug is for the "Wazza" cable to connect the twin cameras on the rear of the Camper. The chrome bolt is the Hayman Reese "rattle stopper" hitch pin.

Damn lockdown... I just keep finding more things to do - usually involving annoying things like dropping the spare tyre. Well, if I need to do it on the side of the road, at least now I have a system sorted out.

I have replaced the simple Anderson plug with a covered Anderson plug in red:







Much neater all round.
