Bit off topic but how many days were you on Googs Graeme? Planning a trip for next year. Am considering either 2 or 3 nights to get from Ceduna to Woomera with the following night (3rd or 4th) in or near Woomera.

PS .... I can vouch for the quality of the Tyre Trek that Chris linked above. I have one and used it for Simpson crossings in the D4. I did consider the extra weight of the jerry cans out the back but didn’t really have room inside with the way our setup works. Basically emptied the jerrys as soon as possible to reduce rear load.

I'm tossing up whether to build a carrier or buy a Tyre Trek. I think I will need to have the jerry can holders though as the SCV8 likes a drink.

We left Ceduna late morning on a leisurely drive, spent a while at the lake including going around to the north then camped some distance on the track north. We arrived at Kingoonya early afternoon after detouring via Mt Finke. However the sand was damp so no difficulty whatsoever on the sand ridges.

Travelling west from where the track exits at the railway line is not permitted. We had returned to Ceduna after Maralinga to then travel Googs from the south.

Edit: Paint protection was quite beneficial on Googs.

My 4.4 TDV8 used 10.7 L/100K actual for Ceduna-Googs-Gawler Ranges-Pt Augusta, 965 kms on 103L fuel, being our longest leg although fuel was available at Mt Ive. My trip average was 10.5L/100K over 4,800 kms.

I think mine would be close to twice that!!! Though I can 11-12 on flat roads when not towing but off-road will see up around 18-20.

We did Gawler and Googs in May this year, really great trip. Googs took 3 days taking our time, track not difficult sth to nth certainly nothing like Simpson. Should have spent more time in Gawler Ranges. Fuel was not a problem. All roads in Sth Australia so much better than Victoria.

If you look on tyrereview.com.au there are some reviews of the Falken WildPeak AT3W, looks pretty good. The other tyre I am interested in , the Pirelli AT+ also gets good reviews there.

Don’t worry about the chips get them wrapped with PPF (Paint Protection Film) I have the whole car wrapped in it anD stops all the shrub scratches & small chips and you cant tell its on it

Oh rats I should have thought of that! By the way SDV8 has been fantastic despite as couple of early infotainment software glitches.... mostly good now though. Nothing else to report.

Regarding the Tyre Trek tyre carrier. I tried to purchase one (even paid my deposit) for the RRS but it does not fit and Tyre Trek were unwilling to modify the design to make it fit, they would have to do some re-engineering. The problem is the RRS hitch is "recessed" under the rear bumper. Adding a 200mm extension would solve the problem but TT are not willing to do the re-engineering.
