Yeah I'm happy with the power and torque of the SDV6. I think the SDV8 is 0.1 seconds faster than the SDV6 (very quick Google search).... so not a lot in it! Maybe the weight of the bigger engine?
I've had two D4s with the same engine/transmission configuration, albeit with a lesser tune (183/600) and found it to still have plenty of poke. The RRS is more powerful and much lighter than the D4, so I really noticed the difference. Fuel usage is a lot leaner too ... especially in low range and heavy sand. It's also more sure footed off and on road than the D4. I was super impressed the first time I got it on a windy, wet, leaf strewn mountain road....absolutely no loss of traction at all. Of course that's running 21" tyres, which are effectively a road tyre. If I want more speed....I steal my wife's BMW :-)
I've noted the storage space issue with the RRS, but I forgot to mention the steering circle sucks compared to the D4. LOL
I'd get a V8 if I could find one but you'll still love the 6.
Cheers,
Kev.
Hi Nux087,
I've owned a 2014 RRS SDV8 for the last 8 months. Like you, I've always wanted one. My dad had a 1981 2 door with the awesome sounding 3.5L V8 (extractors, performance cam, etc, etc).
Anyway, I'm very happy with it. Things to consider:
- Cooling system components in the vee (made out of plastic) can crack and cause dramas.
- Front suspension/arms may need work around 100K.
- Sunroof drains can rust, leading to water ingress over the electrics.
- No GPS map updates are available.
- Parts from wreckers may be hard to source.
- The metallurgy concerns with the V6 engine.
There were some more threads in this forum that you may find helpful, but I can't see them. They may have been archived.
Of course, the later model you're looking at may well have some of these potential issues remedied.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Tallyhochap
Thanks for this - I am also looking to upgrade my L320 - well aware of the V6 issues, front suspension - ditto. My experience has been great - as it was with my V8 '72 rangie a long time ago.
Cooling system - is this SDV8 specific? budgetary number?
The only one that worries me is the sunroof drain - I feel like there should be an option to pour rubber safe rust inhibitor down them.
Any ideas of the prevalence of the sunroof drain issue in Australia (no salty roads)? I'm googling on preventative options but no joy yet... It seems very odd to see that level of corrosion.
And there is another thread with SDV8 head gaskets - I hope that is an exception!
Its a real chicken or the egg thing,, did my semi-blocked rad cause the initial hose to split?
or did the hose splitting cause the overheat that dumped all that engine crud into the rad?
and it was blocked.. I peered through the rad myself...
All the people that do this stuff for a living say option two...

Inspected one today. Looks good - service history fine. 72k 2017
It was missing the two rear retaining clips in the front wheel well liner... any ideas on why they would be routinely missing? (Hopefully not a full accident rebuild)
The transmission (?) Did appear to have a slight leak as there was fluid on the surface.

I'm surmising here but an accident rebuild would surely consist of panels only, as far as the body is concerned, as the body is a chassis-less monocoque. I imagine if that got bent, it's game over rover. There is a lot of stuff up the front that could get trashed in an accident but technically all easy to replace if the body is still straight. At some point the insurance company would pull the trigger on a right-off, if too much was damaged, you'd think.
Just thinking out loud though.
I've heard a weepy transmission is pretty common on RRS ... don't know why. Mine has a bit of a weep too, at 92KKs.
Cheers,
Kev.
Just if you are still looking 2018 is the upgrade year. Note some dealers will say 2018 model but not an upgrade model. Easiest way to tell is front headlights.
Also other changes like In Car audio system and display.
