Not the same suspension as the D4 and the L494 has front and rear subframes rather than a chassis, very similar to the L405.
Hi All.
My father has been looking for a D4 (2014-2016 vintage) for ages.
A L494 RRS has come up for sale locally that got me thinking that this may be an option for him? It is a 2014 SE TDV6 with 225,000km on it.
They're asking $25K, which seems in the ball park, but I'd be screwing this down a bit...
Is the L494 the same suspension as a D4?
The engine looks to be same 3.0TT and has an 8 speed ZF auto?
Did they have SIM card connectivity at this age? Any obvious option packs that I need to watch for?
Any traps I need to be looking at?
Looks a nice vehicle. I might end up keeping it and selling Dad my MY14 D4... lol
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Graeme.
What is parts availability etc like for the L494? Similar to a D4?
Do they have the same LCA bush issues as a D4 and is changing them about the same effort?
At 225,000km I can think of a world of issues that could present themselves, from TDV6 timing belts, auto servicing intervals, air strut ages and condition, +++
I am pretty familiar with the D4 and the issues around them, and have done most routine stuff myself, but just getting my head around if the L494s are a rarer beast to get to terms with?
Cheers,
Chris

The L494 RRS, L405 RR, L462 D5 and the L663 Defender equivalent bushes are at the front on an arm with a ball-joint in the rear end. Originally the bush was available but it appears that only the whole arm might now be available. The bush design has changed several times but I haven't kept up with the changes. I've only very recently changed to one of the last L405s with only 50K kms so it should be a while before it needs new bushes.
Parts availabity shouldn't be an issue.
The L494 and L405 have alloy sub-frames, so don't snatch recover the vehicle to avoid bending the sub-frame. The D5 has steel sub-frames to be more robust than the L494 and L405 and the Defenders are stronger again.
Have a good drive of a L494 for its driving position and ride firmness before committing to one if you're accustomed to driving on rougher roads in your D4.
Edit: The latest bush part number is LR174897, so no need to replace the arm if the ball-joint is OK.

The L494 may have CVDs which are are more expensive than normal shocks. MY14 front CVDs should have been replaced under warranty due to the top seal leaking which showed-up as the suspension not lowering to access height due to oil filling the air-spring, but at 225K they are quite likely to need replacing anyway if more or less original.
