    Cooling System Issues

Well interesting times. Recently climbing Cunninghams Gap red triangle of doom appeared saying coolant level low. I was towing the van and had been keeping an eye on temp gauge which hadn't moved. The traffic had to stop about a "K" from the top and and when I stopped steam was escaping from the bonnet. Thought the engine was cooked. As it happens the QLD government supplies free towing service whilst the Gap construction is taking place, tilt tray turned up and to van and RRS to other side of gap.

After car cooled I refilled water and started car to discover that the leak was from the RHS elbow on the top Radiator hose, in fact the spigot had broker letting coolant spray over the top of the motor. I decided to do a temp repair and was able to jimmy up a seal for the broken spigot , and tie off the other end of the hose with some tubing I had on board.

This repair got me to Deepwater where we stayed overnight , in the morning I called TR Spares and ordered new parts, turns out you have to buy the complete top hose , they said they could deliver overnight to Tamworth. Parts turned up and I swapped out the elbow and patched the broken pipe.

I now have a new pipe to replace, looks like a bit of effort not sure where it runs to may need some help in getting it replaced.

About a year ago I replaced all plastic cooling system components, checking my files , I did miss one piece, turns out it is the one that failed.

The 4.4 in the L322 has a somewhat similar top hose assembly which has a similar small connection for the thermostat housing bleed pipe. I repaired the connection with a screwed brass fitting and did the same at the elbow where the pipe drops down to the thermostat housing. I fitted a new hose when replacing all the hoses and plastic in the V but retained my brass fittings because the replacement's fittings were as fragile as the original so would break off in a few years.

    Hopefully your head gaskets survived.

Engine seems fine towed van another 600 k's home and no issues other that losing small amounts of fluid dues to my bush fix. Have now replaced the fuel cooler connections, will keep an eye on the beast before heading off again.

Also just replaced the O rings on the thermostat housing connectors. I carry a full set of O rings as spares. Ordered a new serpentine belt as well, seems 160,000 miles or ten years is the replacement suggestion. This job looks doable in an emergency. Off to the Mundi Bash in a week or two may do before I go.

Just bought a 2016 RRS SDV6 with 134000km on it and this was a job I was going to do is to change out all old coolant pipes and there plastic parts to new ones but obviously when $ allow me to buy the parts but it looks like this will be the first hose and parts I buy.
If anybody can recommend what should be first coolant hoses to last to coolant hoses change sequence you may have done already and any other preventive maintenance I should perform on my RRS at this age and KM I would be really appreciate.

    Cooling System Issues

I changed my 08 hoses over a year ago due to cracking of plastic parts, a risk that keeps growing.

I had previously replaced the elbow on the block passenger side (very difficult) which was cheese and also the top valley fitting twice preemptively (one time along with oil cooler) that cracks.

What then occurred after 15 years is the plastic T fitting with the coolant temp sensor started leaking due to a crack and then the return line to the overflow bottle spigot on top of the radiator snapped like a twig when I lent on it.

So a new radiator and hose kit solved all that (comes with temp sensor and thermostat) along with a new expansion bottle. Back flush your heater matrix during this process.

The fitting on the side of the block can't be forgotten if already 10 years old. Changing this at same time as changing air con compressor would be a smart double.

Don't know about the V6 but I did all plastic components , bar the one that failed about 18 months ago. Didn't do hoses, which may be next if I keep the car. I believe silicon hoses are available, I haven't been able to find a source as yet.

My answer change the plastics now based on age of vehicle and do hoses when finances allow.

Except aside from valley and block side piece other parts not sold separately for TDV6. Full LR hose kit covers everything just shop around (UK).
